EFLIII's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=1279Columbine RPG (PC) - Sun, 08 Aug 2010 23:26:24https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=4308Today as I play the game I was very distracted by my own thoughts and I could help but think about the family of the children that were lost in this tragedy. I thought about how they might feel as they played the game. These thoughts have constantly been in my mind because I recently lost a family member to teen violence. Darrien Albert was my cousin; he was beaten to death by teenagers as he was protecting other friends. I could not imagine someone making a game out of my cousin’s death as these game designers have done. I really cannot wait until I do not have to play this game anymore; it brings back too many negative memories.Sun, 08 Aug 2010 23:26:24 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=4308&iddiary=8020Columbine RPG (PC) - Sat, 07 Aug 2010 21:34:07https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=4308I played the game today for about 30 minutes; it was quite disturbing. It became quite boring quickly. I enjoy playing first person shooters and I will even say that I sometimes kill innocent people while I'm playing any of the GTA games; however, it doesn't bother me because I know how fictitious the entire game is. While I played this game I was really bothered because I kept thinking about the disturbing video footage that was in the "Bowling for Columbine" film. Those scenes were frightening; I couldn't imagine how those people felt. As I continued to play the game I just couldn't help but think about how I felt when I came home and found out about the shooting. Then I reflected on the college shootings that have been occurring. I think that it was a horrible idea to create a game about such a tragedy.Sat, 07 Aug 2010 21:34:07 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=4308&iddiary=8008Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (360) - Mon, 26 Jul 2010 11:23:04https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=4284I woke up today and played a few more missions of the game and as I played I thought about the controversy of the game has sparked so much criticism from many different sects and groups of people, ranging from parents to politicians. I thought about the violence that is necessary for successful game-play. There are many missions that can be accomplished without killing people; however, many of the those missions promote other behavior that is not commendable such as drug deals; vandalizing public property; or advancing in the hierarchy of the local gang. As I focused on the violence that is always accessible I also thought about how there is a balance of corrective action toward the violence. The more sinister you allow Carl to be, as in all GTA games, the more that his enemies and the police will come after him. I thought that this is very interesting because the game allows you to do whatever you want while at the same time you will have to endure the consequences of every deviant action.Mon, 26 Jul 2010 11:23:04 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=4284&iddiary=7988Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (360) - Sun, 25 Jul 2010 23:29:03https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=4284Ernest F. Ledbetter III July 25, 2010 San Andreas Day 2 Today I played San Andreas for about an hour; instead of free-lancing I completed a few of the beginning missions. They were interesting; I understand that each addition to the series perpetuates a particular stereotypical presentation of ethnicities that are affected by overt and covert prime but it was still interesting that the African American character of the game series had to be an impoverished thug in the ghetto’s of a type of Los Angeles. As I was playing the game I observed at how the first few missions had to deal with hookers, drug dealers, drug abuse, and gang members. I thought about how these images of the black community are still be used to represent the whole of the black experience. When we observe how blacks are displayed in the media it is not much different than how they are portrayed in the video game that is set almost twenty years ago. I kept playing the games and by the time I got to the “Nines and AK’s “mission, I began to examine my life and reflect on how I could not relate to anything in the game. Growing up in a Christian house-hold, I was not familiar with drug use, gangs, or any sort of lasciviousness or lewd behavior. As the son of a pastor, I’m thankful that my parent protected us from those things. There were gangs in my neighborhood and drugs are everywhere, however, there was a naivety that I possess because it was not casual sight to see in my suburban hometown. I noticed that as I was playing I cringed upon the thought of hookers being so common around me. I thought about my three older sisters and how I would feel if I found out that they were of that profession. I know for a fact that my ethical perspectives that are shaped by my Western Christian Faith influence my thinking and my experience as I am playing the game.
