mmakows2's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=1602Fallout 3 (PS3) - Tue, 18 Dec 2012 08:38:29https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5513Fallout 3 is a post-apocalyptic action RPG in which you play as the “Lone Wanderer” who has escaped from Vault 101 to search the ruins of Washington D.C. for his/her father. In the beginning of the game, you customize your character from birth through adulthood. The storyline allows you to set up S.P.E.C.I.A.L attributes such as strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility, and luck to build your characters personality that will eventually help him/her through several situations throughout the game. The game also follows a very important aspect in the game, karma. The statistical gauging of karma also affects the gameplay for the players as the player makes specific decision regarding how they want to play the game. Fallout 3 contains all the basic mechanics of a RPG and contains basic FPS functions as well. The player can engage in combat or basic movement in first person POV or third person POV. Regardless of game mechanics, the game atmosphere is extremely beautiful. The sandbox-like environment can influence number of hours of wandering around in the “Capital Wasteland.” With the vastness of the game environment, numerous locations that the “Lone Wanderer” can visit are welcoming based on his/her positive or negative karma. Therefore, you can be vilified in one town and be praised in another. Along with the various locations, factions wandering the wastelands can attack or help you based on your status with them. Since Fallout 3 has such a massive environment, the graphics portrays beautiful scenery and dismal environments as well. However, since the game is expansive, numerous saves may be needed because of how expansive the environment is. Also, saving is a major aspect because the game experiences some glitches that can freeze the game and might require you to reset the console. Still, the glitches are somewhat rare and does very little to detract from the Fallout 3 experience. Therefore, this game is highly recommended to lose yourself for several hours and immerse you in a rich concept.Tue, 18 Dec 2012 08:38:29 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5513&iddiary=9807Dead Space (iPd) - Tue, 06 Nov 2012 20:07:36https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5325As a huge fan of Dead Space, I was slightly hesitant to play a mobile version of the game. However, after several playthroughs, I have decided that the mobile version of the highly appraised series lives up to high expectations. As originally thought, I felt the game was going to be a re-hash of the console game Dead Space. But, I was pleasantly surprise that it came with its own storyline. In the game, you play as Vandal. Vandal is being instructed by the Church of Unitology to fix some equipment on the Sprawl. However, Vandal has unknowingly disabled the Sprawl’s security measures and started the Necromorph infestation on the space station. Through the story, Vandal has realized the Church’s manipulative behavior and attempts to fix the damage he/she has caused. Since Dead Space was highly venerated as a successful survival-horror game, horror elements must be included. The iOS version incorporates dark tunnels, claustrophobic encounters, horrific monsters, and maddening hallucinations to hone in the Dead Space atmosphere. Every chapter allows the player to be challenged and weary of the further developments in the story. However, there are some aspects of the game that are extremely frustrating. The common complaint I have heard and experienced in the game is the controls. Using a touch screen to dissemble necromorphic flesh is frustrating. In order to successfully kill an enemy, you must be very direct and precise. To correspond to the previous statement, Vandal is frustrating to move as well. I cannot express how many times I have fired my weapon while attempting to open a door. However, after a few stumbles, you are able to overcome this glaring error and continue with the gameplay. To be concise, the main purpose of buying this game would be the story. The story is completely original and fills in the gaps between Dead Space and Dead Space 2. If you appreciate a good story or good series overall, then I highly recommend that you check out the game.Tue, 06 Nov 2012 20:07:36 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5325&iddiary=9614Spirit (iPd) - Tue, 30 Oct 2012 19:35:36https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5300Spirit is an excellent iOS game that utilizes quick movements and the progressive difficulty in game levels. The rules of Spirit are relatively simple, you use your finger to guide a “spirit” and you must create vacuums to capture enemies. However, in order to capture and destroy the enemies you must propel your finger to go around and around an enemy which creates the vacuum to suck the enemies in. By creating these vacuums, you are able to advance to the next level. However, with the progression of each level, you deal with a variety of new enemies that are longer, bigger, and more dangerous. Also, the inclusions of lasers make progression challenging as well. However, the player can play the game in three modes: Classic, Extreme, and Pulse. Classic mode follows the exact guidelines given above. But Extreme mode is faster and enemies are plentiful. It is not advisable to start playing the game in extreme mood right off the bat since it is rather difficult to make it through without losing all your lives within a minute and a half. However, Pulse is extremely fun. Instead of your “spirit” making the vacuums that captures the enemy, circles appear that you can hit to create vacuums. In addition, as the enemies are sucked into these vacuums, coins become a new factor in the game. To make it more challenging, the enemies appear in a flowing manner. Therefore, the game becomes more intense and challenging and bumping into enemies is relatively easier to do. Overall, for players who enjoy arcade-type games and have a little time to waste, this game is perfect. With that comment said, for players who are looking for story and hours of gameplay will most likely not enjoy playing this game. Also, I do suggest that in order to obtain the full experience of this game, it would perform better with the iPad. The iPhone version is a little frustrating due to the lack of space of the screen.Tue, 30 Oct 2012 19:35:36 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5300&iddiary=9586Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PS3) - Mon, 22 Oct 2012 11:04:28https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5282Eidos Montreat and Square Enix's Deus Ex: Human Revolution is an action RPG game that focuses on Adam Jensen, a security director at Sarif Industries, in which he must hunt down the people who attacked the facility and caused the death of his former girlfriend, Megan Reed. However, due to the attack on Sarif, Jensen is now an augmented individual. One of the great aspects of Deus Ex: Human Revolution is its open-ended nature and the social interaction within the game. You have the ability of making tough choices and choose which offensive strategy to use: stealth or non-stealth. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the first game that I’ve played were you can sneak past enemies throughout the entire game but ultimately having to engage in a little combat every once in a while. Or you can choose to blast your way through. Unfortunately, the one element that is extremely out of touch with the rest of the game is the boss fights. When a player chooses to engage in little combat, naturally, the player is going to have an extensive line of arsenal to help defeat the bosses. Therefore, if you play with stealth, you are going to need pure luck to pull it through all three boss fights. In my opinion, the inclusion of boss fights really don’t match with the game at all as it takes away from the player’s ability to choose their own specific route within the game. But, on the process of talking about combat, it is extremely surprising that a game published by Square Enix would have the characteristics of a FPS. However, it is very well-done. The player has an array of weapons to choose, a plentiful supply of ammo, and the ability to upgrade augmentations and other armor. Lastly, with any RPG, the story has to be engaging. Deus Ex: Human Revolution has a terrific storyline that leads to multiple endings due to the player’s ability with social interaction with other characters. The game is also equipped with multiple side missions that, when completed, will help the player upgrade his augmentations. By doing these side missions and getting rewarded with upgrades, the player will be more prepared to complete the missions in the main storyline. However, it should be noted that the player will not be able to upgrade all of his augmentations on his/her first playthrough. Therefore, when the player decides to playthrough the game again, they can choose different routes when it comes to upgrading so that gameplay doesn’t become repetitive. Overall, Deus Ex: Human revolution is a fantastic game that will satisfy RPG fans and FPS fans.Mon, 22 Oct 2012 11:04:28 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5282&iddiary=9565Angry Birds Space (iPd) - Tue, 16 Oct 2012 07:47:46https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5268When I heard that Rovio was releasing Angry Bird Space, I was kinda excited. As a huge supporter of the space program, I was intrigued on how they would be able to pull this off. Additionally, I only played the original Angry Birds a couple of times, nothing too strenuous. In Angry Birds Space, the rules of the original game are still intact. You must defeat the piggies but in a mix of zero-gravity and gravity induced environments. I like to think of this game as the Angry Birds for the Angry Birds “challenged,” the zero-gravity becomes a good friend but also can screw you over when you need it the most. Anyway, the game has very unique environments. You go through various planets such as Pig Bang, Cold Cuts, Fry Me to The Moon, Utopia, Red Planet, Eggsteroids, and Danger Zone. As you go through the planets, of course, like any Angry Birds game it progressively gets harder. The great thing about Angry Birds Space is that you are in an environment in which is not really explored to a great extent. Not many games explore the physics in space, so, it was nice to actually have a game environment that could either benefit you or quite the opposite. Also, Angry Birds Space has new birds like a Space Eagle that destroys a predetermined amount of space. But the graphics of the game are very nice to the eye and tend to be a little distracting when trying to aim for a pig. Therefore, if you have been a fan of the Angry Bird series since the release of the first, then you will enjoy Angry Birds Space. The game has great graphics for an iOS game, a nice storyline, a cool environment, the absence of gravity, and piggies.Tue, 16 Oct 2012 07:47:46 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5268&iddiary=9547Cry of Fear (PC) - Mon, 08 Oct 2012 20:01:57https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5236As a supporter of Indie games, I keep updated with the new releases of horror indie games. In February, the release of Cry of Fear was highly regarded as one of the best horror indie games released this year. It took me a while to actually get around to playing it and all I can say is that I regret not playing sooner. The game itself is a Half-Life 1 mod but the story of the game is actually quite interesting. You play as Simon who wakes up in a dark alley, knowing nothing of his whereabouts or what has happened recently. However, as he begins exploring his environment he encounters monsters that represents the darkness and fear that follows him. Therefore, you get a mix of horror and a psychological thriller all in one package. The basic controls of the game is actually quite simple, however, the inventory can get tricky but eventually you get used to it has you have quick select, you pockets, and your bag as your inventory slots. The monsters in the game are quite grotesque looking but represent different fears surprisingly. In order to defeat these enemies you utilize melee weapons and arsenal. You get an array of knives and guns, for example, you have semi-automatic weapons, automatic weapons, handguns, shotguns, and sniper rifles to help you defeat enemies. The game also utilizes puzzles as well. In some instances, you have to find items in order to make gates or equipment work and find keycards to access buildings in order to progress. However, as a person who loves a good story, the game accomplishes this aspect very well. Some parts of the story are confusing but it allows the player to become more involved in the story. Lastly, the graphics (especially for a Half-Life 1 mod) aren't that bad, of course there is pixelization but it’s tastefully done. In conclusion, I recommend this game to anyone who likes a good story and likes defeat monsters. If you've played Afraid of Monsters than I highly recommend this game.Mon, 08 Oct 2012 20:01:57 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5236&iddiary=9511Ao Oni (PC) - Mon, 01 Oct 2012 17:06:20https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5212Ao Oni is a Japanese RPG indie game in which you play as Hiroshi and go into a haunted mansion with a group of friends that suddenly become frightened by a monster. The main concept of the game is to be chased by the monster for a predetermined amount of time until you are able to escape. However, you are still stuck in a mansion and must find your way out. That's where the puzzles come into the gameplay. In order, to unlock rooms or obtain items you must complete a puzzle to access the key to the locked room or the item you need to progress further into the game. Due to the inability to determine when the monster comes out, tension and stress really become a huge factor in the game. I think that's one of the main points that I really like about the game in general and that's its ability to utilize basic horror elements and make it into a successful game. Also, the storyline is fairly decent as well, kind of cliché but it still becomes exciting as you progress through the game. The utilization of horror is apparent through the monster and what it does to Hiroshi and his friends. If you have watched a couple of Japanese horror films, most clichés are apparent in the game as well. Unfortunately, one thing that does become frustrating in the game is kinda reminiscent to the Silent Hill series. That one thing is trying to progress at an amazingly slow pace. It can be quite difficult at times due to the varying difficulty with the puzzles and the inability to put point a and point b together. Overall, it's a very good indie game that definitely deserves some attention. If you enjoy RPG, horror, puzzles, and a very decent storyline, I would check it out.Mon, 01 Oct 2012 17:06:20 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5212&iddiary=9486Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PS3) - Mon, 24 Sep 2012 14:51:02https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5176I will admit first that I started playing the Call of Duty series back in 2008, due to my lack of interest in first-person shooter games beyond that point, and I have always somewhat enjoyed the series. When the release date of Modern Warfare 3 was announced, I was moderately excited. After playing Modern Warfare 2 campaign mode, I was impressed with the storyline overall and became anxious regarding whether or not a sequel would be in its future. However, that would soon come true. As I was playing through the campaign story in Modern Warfare 3, I felt a sort of repetitiveness through it. Find the Russian president, save the daughter, kill the bad guy, and save the day was the main modus operandi throughout the entire campaign. Therefore, I thought the campaign of the game was a little disappointing and unappealing. However, I felt that the Special Ops and Multiplayer options made the game. The Special Ops missions were exciting and engaging. The inclusion of missions with time limits, a direct goal, predator-and-prey gameplay, and the involvement of special weapons made the lackluster performance of the campaign mode a little more forgivable. But, the Call of Duty franchise has always been well received due to its multiplayer mode. The multiplayer mode in Modern Warfare 3 is more impressive than its previous predecessors. Some of the features that should be noticed would be the notable details in the graphics, the vast selection of weapons and equipment, the considerable amount of game playlists and so forth. However, there tends to be lag and host migrations when playing online that occur in the middle of a game or towards the end that could leave most players frustrated. Overall, Modern Warfare 3 is a good game if you have a few hours to kill and just need to relieve a little tension and stress. If you are looking for a game that only succeeds in multiplayer and Special Ops then purchase the game but don’t waste your time if you’re looking for a good story.Mon, 24 Sep 2012 14:51:02 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5176&iddiary=9449The Walking Dead (iPd) - Mon, 17 Sep 2012 09:41:58https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5148As a huge fan of the TV series, there was reasonable doubt within me that the game would be mediocre as most games from movies/TV series turn out to be. However, The Walking Dead for the iPad is a role playing adventure game that utilizes point-and-click features that allow you to interact with the environment around you. The highlighting feature of this game would have to be the impact of the moral decisions you have to make. Due to this feature, the decisions you make impact the relationships with the other characters in the game. To me, the whole premise of this game is more based on emotions and actual character development than most zombie adventure games who focus more on action and violence. Another great feature of this game is the stylistic environment. The utilization of a comic book style actually allows the player to feel like they are within the comic book series; however, they have the ability to control what happens instead of the typical predestination that is programmed in other zombie adventure titles. However, The Walking Dead has been released as a downloadable game through Playstation Network, XBOX live, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and the iOS. Unfortunately, due to my lack of PSN credits to buy the game for the PS3 console, I decided to purchase the game via iTunes for the iPad. Thankfully, due to the games point-and-click features and the minimal moving around you have to do, the game controls are not annoyingly frustrating and is actually quite enjoyable to play on the iPad and the iPhone as well. However, I would still recommend that you purchase it for your preferred console or for the computer, but the iOS version can provide a nice getaway whenever it is necessary. In conclusion, if you enjoy RPG, point-and-click, and making decisions that impact your gameplay, then I would highly recommend that you play this game.Mon, 17 Sep 2012 09:41:58 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5148&iddiary=9412Dead Space (PS3) - Sun, 09 Sep 2012 21:17:47https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5082On January 1,  2011, it was my birthday and in the same day I was introduced to Dead Space. During that time (last year, I know), I was familiarized with the Resident Evil and the Silent Hill series. However, I did not know how I missed Dead Space. Therefore I will proceed to say that Dead Space flat out is a fantastic game. It is the only game series to this very day that still scares the crap out of me. My reason for concluding this is because of Dead Space's basic elements: terrifying ambiance, horrific monsters, an engaging story, and it's basic gameplay. The whole notion of Dead Space is to create an atmosphere of hopeless and isolation. Therefore, you play as an engineer, Isaac Clarke, whom is sent to a space mining vessel, the USG Ishimura, with a team to repair a communications black out on board of the vessel. However, the mission does not become what it all cracks up to be, instead you are fighting to survive and trying to find a way to get the hell out! Pretty basic stuff, right? Wrong. Oh so wrong. There is more then meets the eye. Not only are you fighting the horrific alien specimen that has taken over the USG Ishimura, but you are fighting with other survivors, your repair team, and an archaic religion that worships fanatically over an alien artifact that may have caused all these horrific situations! Other than the story, the soundtrack of the game also amps up the experience. The soundtrack develops with the environment and the encounters you face on board the Ishimura, therefore, making the ambiance in the game tense and stressful. However, the soundtrack isn't the only thing that makes this game frightening. It's the environment itself! You're in a space ship that is over 60 years old and it's in disarray. You have blood everywhere, bodies strewed all over the corridors and rooms, organic materials scaling the walls, monsters in the vents, and frantic messages scribbled on the wall with blood. It's extremely horrifying and fills your every cell with dread. Aside from the basics, the gameplay is relatively simple. You shoot weapons, stomp, and hit. However, you can upgrade your weapons, your RIG (contains your armor, health, oxygen counter, and archives), kinesics module, and status module. The controls are fairly simple, therefore, allowing the player to become accustom to them very fast. I can rant and rave about this game all day. I can admit with much pride that I have all the video games ( the iOS version as well), novels, comic books, and movies. I even have the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (Dead Space Version) song as my ringtone! Anyways, if you enjoy a good scare, a great soundtrack, and an engaging gameplay. Play this game!Sun, 09 Sep 2012 21:17:47 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=5082&iddiary=9382
