In this case, the level itself becomes an obstacle to overcome, as well as the fighters. An example of this is how in the level of Donkey Kong's jungle Japes, the area is very small and hard to use a running tactic. The level in this case, would help donkey kong because he is a slow charachter relying on close-up moves and combos to beat someone. Another level is Yoshi's Dream Land and it's size and objects. Since Yoshi does not have an Up B extra-jump move, there are clouds placed on the edge yo help fighters whose jump ability is limited, to get back on the field. In a big way, this game forces you to strategize beyond the move-set of each charachter and start thinking in many ways.Sun, 25 Feb 2007 04:10:38 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1495&iddiary=3149Super Smash Brothers (N64) - Sun, 25 Feb 2007 04:03:24https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1495Super Smash Brothers was the first game I remember being fun even after I had beat the game and recieved the rewards. It is a fun multi-player most of all, and it re-invents the idea of a fighting game. In this particular game sessions I saw how much Smash Bros. contributes to making the fighting mroe enjoyable. The charachters, such as Samus, all have unique weapons to fight each other with. Samus uses a charching arm gun to shoot balls of energy at you, but this is one of many techniques you could use. Along side with adding depth to the fighting, are the unique kind of emotins generated on the players. Each charachter has a different move, but no one fighter completely dominates the other, it's a matter of how well each is trained in his or her charachter option. For example, I could have very good aim and technique in having Samus hit an opponent with a energy blast, but a charachter like Fox, who can use a reflecting shield to send the ball back at me might have the advantage in that sort of situation. When put in a multiplayer situation, this game is very complex.Sun, 25 Feb 2007 04:03:24 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1495&iddiary=3148Advance Wars 2:Black Hole Rising (GBA) - Fri, 09 Feb 2007 04:34:45https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1212While playing this game, I try and play with a very solidified strategy and tact, but sometimes you have to throw the rule book out, especially if you are somewhat impatient like me. I play a somewhat agressive style, impetuous, but quick. Sometimes I find that by making rash decisions and executing while I play can work out, but this type of play will either make you win really fast, or make you lose slowly and horribly. Theres nothing worst in this game than losing after playing for more than an hour. A lot of the times you believe that you have a fighting chance and you dont want to give up, but then eventually you start to see that the enemy has the upper hand. Its a very frustrating game if this happens, but it's an amazing game in the fact that you are about as happy when you win, as you are just as mad when you lose. It's definetly a game of emergence, because the graphical content, buttons, and turn based system make it very simplistic as far as logistics go, but the amount of thought and strategy going into it is limitless. A very addicting game, but it does lose it's fun and appeal about half-way through because it lacks a strong story line.Fri, 09 Feb 2007 04:34:45 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1212&iddiary=2581Advance Wars 2:Black Hole Rising (GBA) - Fri, 09 Feb 2007 04:29:31https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1212Advance Wars 2 is an awesome continuation of the advance wars series, now continuing on the Nintendo DS platform. This is a strategy/RPG game, where you take the role of the new kid on the military block. The background story is that in this earth like world there are several rivaling nations, all unified, but different in their own way. The main enemy here is the Black Hole nation adn they are essentially trying to take over the world with their superior military might. The game is set up so you assume the roles of different generals from different nations, each pertaining to a specific color eg: blue green yellow etc. The gameplay is down right addicting, it's so in depth and chess-like that you want to keep playing and conquer. Basically, you usually start off worst off than your enemy as far as having fighters and equipment. This game is really detailed in that matter, I found that this was the most difficult part was trying to understand everything you can and can't have. Each player has to take turns to make their moves, which means planning ahead to a very extreme level. Sometimes a single game can take more than an hour, depending on the player.Fri, 09 Feb 2007 04:29:31 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1212&iddiary=2578Soul Caliber III (PS2) - Wed, 31 Jan 2007 17:23:13https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1019Soul Caliber III is not only a great 3d fighter, but it is a great two player versus game. This is what an excellent game does, it involves the player using a great one player mode, like the Chronicles of the SWord and then on top of that you can also have a multiplayer mode that will never get old if you play with the right fighters. THis is the reason this makes a great tournament game. As far as the charachter selection for this goes, its all great. Every charachter has their own unique weapon and style of fighting. My personall favorite is Kilik. He uses the Staff as his choice of weapon, ultimately the strongest weapon is the Jangu Staff. Kilik is great at keeping his distance from the fighter yet still efficiently taking life. His staff can also get longer and do sneak and/or surprise attacks on the enemy. An important element of Kilik, as well as the other fighters (except maybe Nightmare) are their kick attacks. Kilik has great kick attacks considering his powerful weapon, he is swift and very fluid. The best part is that he keeps the enemy guessing and that is perhaps the most important key to winning in a game like Soul Caliber.Wed, 31 Jan 2007 17:23:13 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1019&iddiary=2322Soul Caliber III (PS2) - Wed, 31 Jan 2007 04:13:40https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1019Soul Caliber III is the latest instalment (released) for the Soul Caliber franchise which started with the series Soul Blade. This is basically a fighter, but much more complex than most. This is a 3d fighter with very detailed environments. Of course it has all the basic fighter menu stuff, such as Arcade Mode, versus mode, and training, but what sets this fighter apart from many is the innovative Chronicles of the Sword mode. This mode plays much like an RPG would, where you get to pick a custom fighter and you follow a very engaging story involving the Sould Caliber Sword. This is what I have played the most. The best part I believe, is the crazy customizations you could do to your charachter. From hair and eye color, to wearing whimsical hats, the way to design your fighter is very detailed. Aside from your charachter you can also assemble a team comprised of fighters who are part of your "kingdom" . Every one of these fighters, including yourselves, may weild a different weapon, and are sutied for certain enemies. The world where you play is designed much like a gameboard, and like this gamebaord all the fighters you command are assigned certain chess-like moves on the gameboard world. When you run into another fighter on the route you are on, you have to fight the enemy either by engaging in the actual arcade style fight or letting the computer go at it. Its not too complex, but the gameplay time generated by this mode is quite a bit.Wed, 31 Jan 2007 04:13:40 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1019&iddiary=2187Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Fri, 19 Jan 2007 14:21:59https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=806Recently I dropped by a friends house to play some Wii, however, what I didn't know is that I would stop playing that after ten minutes and then start playing good old fashioned Goldeneye for the N64. I was looking at someone play the level, and then decided I wanted to play for myself. Im not sure if it was nostalgia, but playing that game was mroe fun than expected. A game like goldeneye is truly timeless, it will always be fun not because of any technical aspects obviously because the shooter has been perfected time and time again. The reason Goldeneye is such a good game and you keep coming back to it is because of the originality of it, it was truly the most addicting game at the time and as a gamer you remember that feeling. Also there are so many memorable levels and charachters in the game that you keep coming back to certain ones and try to pass them on a harder level like 00 agent. Also, Goldeneye happens to be the best multiplayer game on the N64, the reason for this is because everyone knows the game really well, the guns, the levels, the tricks, and the overall build of the game. The 4 player split screen was revolutionary for the multiplayer shooter aspect, and Goldeneyes was flawless and fun.Fri, 19 Jan 2007 14:21:59 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=806&iddiary=1787Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike (PS2) - Tue, 16 Jan 2007 23:51:16https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=533Street Fighter 3 Third Strike was a really good game to play in a tournment. I played it at the video game tournament and it was pretty fun. It was even more difficult to play another person than it was to play the computer. However, there is not much of an audience for 2dimensional fighting games. A game like street fighter is meant to be played in Arcades mostly, so it is sometimes not rare to have someone play the game with a arcade joystick style controller. I believe it make sthe gameplay easier and makes someone slightly better, ever since the Street Fighter 2 Arcade game came out, games of that two dimensional style are played better with arcade joysticks. Another aspect which becomes aparent when playing this game more seriously against other players is that everyone plays differently and strategy becomes very important. As I was playing at home I thought this might be the case. The hardest part to do in this game is parry. This parry/counter technique is probably the most game-altering move in the game, with mastering this, you can pretty much own the competition. For this game the hardest part for me to to is countering supermoves.Tue, 16 Jan 2007 23:51:16 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=533&iddiary=1522Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike (PS2) - Fri, 12 Jan 2007 00:17:09https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=533Today I played Street Fighter II 3rd Strike for the playstation 2. It is part of a really good two game package of the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection. Its a very simple game and is of my favorite genre of video gaming which is the classic 2d fighter. There are a lot of charachters each with their own moves and special fighting abilities. The beauty about 2d fighters is that they can do a lot things that look cool because the gameplay loooks very cartoonish, yet you dont need everything to be 3d generated or bombastic. Aside from graphics though the game is very addicting for me. I played as Ken, a classic charachter in the Street Fighter Series. Ken is a very versatile player, one of the strongest, and his moves are all very cool looking. I set the difficulty for the computer to the highest because there is a video game tournament featuring this game this coming Saturday. Any other setting would prove a little too easy I think because I play these games all the time. I took me about an hour to beat the game with Ken. One of the new and spectacular things about this game which sets it apart from all other 2dimensional fighting games is a parry/counter system. The theory is basically instead of holding back to block an attack coming at you, you very carefully try and time the attack about to hit you and tap forward quikcly, this initiats a quick counter strike and a chance for you to hit back the opponent. If acrefully executed, one could counter an entire super combo, these are super damaging moves you could do when you have sufficient energy stored up from fighting in your energy bar. Ken is a very fast and damaging charachter, sometimes his moves have slow recovery time, but his super moves are very useful and easy to link up.Fri, 12 Jan 2007 00:17:09 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=533&iddiary=1263God of War (PS2) - Thu, 11 Jan 2007 00:15:36https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=418God of War is great epic game. It takes place in the Ancient times of Greece. Obviously this means there are Gods, demons, and all sorts of mythical creatures. The story follows Kratos who is not a man, but he is not a God either. The point of the quest is for him go gain a sort of godhood or legendary status. Kratos is a big bald pale fighter, he weilds to gnarled blades that emit fire and have some sort of retraction chains. He seems like an interesting charachter, typical bad hard ass type, he is not good, but his missions lead to good causes. The story is also very good, theres a lot of room for creativity since there is a whole classical myth to work with. For now, the mission is to destroy Ares, God of War, which I believe will be the ultimate goal in the game, since that's what its title is. But I do like how epic everything is and all the dire consequences. Perhaps the most powerful aspect and most entertaining is the fighting system. It works of three simple attack commands: light swift strike, heavy slow strike, and grab. If you add in some jumps and move around the analog sticks some, you can create a very numerous amount of combos and moves. Another aspect is that you can use some special moves you pick up along the way, these special moves will be exlpined along the way. Each of these special moves are measured by a blue power bar, above a green power bar, and there is one last red bar that is filled that is for the upgrading of weapons you weild. This is of course somewhat typical of platformers.Thu, 11 Jan 2007 00:15:36 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=418&iddiary=1165
