sjgonzal's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=215Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - Mon, 26 Feb 2007 14:57:05https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1501The camera follows Link in a style similar to Mario 64, and yet so much more rewarding. In order to give players more control over the viewpoint and enable better fighting, Nintendo came up with an innovative feature. First of all, tapping the Z button will force the camera behind Link. When you see a character or an object that interests you or you're being attacked by an enemy, press the Z trigger. This allows you to circle your enemies and slash at them while side-stepping, back-flipping and shielding yourself from the enemies. While you are locking on to a target, the screen will become boxed to let you know that the target mode is active. To additionally help you keep track of your attackers, your fairy will hover over the target's head. There is also an alternate camera setting that requires you to hold down the Z button to keep a lock, but your fingers will probably get tired after a while. Needless to say that the Z button feature works impressively well and is sure to find its way into future 3D games.Mon, 26 Feb 2007 14:57:05 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1501&iddiary=3160Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - Mon, 26 Feb 2007 13:36:28https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1501I can tell if I was a little younger I would be completely enthralled by this game. As soon as you pick up the controls for the first time and start to explore the vast universe, you know you're in for a treat. At first, the control is very reminiscent of Super Mario 64. But Ocarina of Time is not a platformer, a fact that takes some getting used to when trying out Link's various actions. There is no jump button. You can still jump at certain points in the game, but it is not integral to the gameplay that players actually control the jump themselves. Instead, Ocarina of Time introduces an auto-jump feature where Link will jump the last possible moment when running toward a ledge. It sounds annoying in theory, but it works very well for this type of game.Mon, 26 Feb 2007 13:36:28 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1501&iddiary=3158Pirates, Vikings and Knights (PC) - Wed, 07 Feb 2007 02:07:28https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1144If you have half-life 2 downloaded to your computer then you will be able to download this game for free! This game really is the exact same setup as COunter-Strike, except that's it's so much cooler being a knight and degrading peasants(press c and i forget which number). I didnt really comprehend what the actual point of the game was, but what you have to do is that knights usually guard the treasure, and the vikings and pirates try to steal it. Some levels favor the different groups, and there are different modes of play for them. One of the setups is that there is only one box of treasure, and everyone goes after the guy that has it (capture the flag). Another one that is impossible as a viking, is the tower level in the desert. It's very much like 'king of the hill' in halo where there is a certain spot that you have to hold at all costs. I can't wait until they start adding new characters that you can be for each team. For example, they are going to add to the knights class are archers, clerics and lords. To the pirates: swashbucklers, captains, and freebooters. To the vikings: huscarls, and jarls???Wed, 07 Feb 2007 02:07:28 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1144&iddiary=2468Final Fantasy XII (PS2) - Wed, 07 Feb 2007 01:52:45https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1143I will admit that this game does take some time getting used to, and that eventually you start seeing how massive of a project this really is. The graphics that are maintained are quite exceptional, and not's until you are about 3-6 hours into the game that it really starts growing on you. What is really refreshing and quite possible revolutionary is that the fighting is alittle different. Instead of stopping the action, and going to a seperate window to fight, the enemies are on the screen and automatically just start fighting you. there is a targeting system defined by a colored line that shoots toward you if you are going to be attacked. There is also the revolutionary system of gambits. You can automate your party's attacks if there is a certain enemy, or even decide what magic to cast. This feature I think is one of the best, and will be copied by every RPG, because it offers a wide array of combinations that you can do.Wed, 07 Feb 2007 01:52:45 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1143&iddiary=2467Pirates, Vikings and Knights (PC) - Tue, 06 Feb 2007 21:51:33https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1144I was playing Counter Strike when me and my roomate found that he had accidentally downloaded this game called "pirates..." I wasn't too impressed with the title, but how wrong was I soon to find out. The type of game is a first-person shooter that emphasizes swords and crossbows instead of guns and grenades. Actually, if you are a pirate, you can have a gun, sabre, and keg of gunpowder at your disposal. That's right I said keg. However, the pirates are super weak, and have no defense. The knights have a huge Excalibur-type sword, a crossbow, and are really hard to kill. Finally, the Vikings have an axe and sword, and are super crazy. It amazes me how simplistic this game is, and yet I've had more fun with it in 20 minutes, than I have had playing CS my whole life. Even if you are not htat good at first-person shooters like I am, just the graphics and envrionments alone will entertain you. Battle on scurvy scallywags.Tue, 06 Feb 2007 21:51:33 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1144&iddiary=2462Final Fantasy XII (PS2) - Tue, 06 Feb 2007 21:31:07https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1143So I was defintely excited whwn I borrowed this game from the library. I have been a longtime fan of the series, especially VII. The opening sequence has the feel of Naboo from Star Wars I, mixed with the artmwork of Final Fantasy X. There are no complaints in terms of graphics, Square Enix has outdone themselves once again. I played on a 13 inch TV, and it looked like I was playing on a plasma screen. The plot itself is very Star Wars-like, you are an ordinary orphan who eventually gets caught up in a fight against an empire threatening to take over the world. If you really want to talk about unoriginality, the dialogue is a little too much. Everyone has this ridiculous proper English accent that seems to borrow off Lord of The Rings, without the good acting. What has made the past games real is that everyone has a normal accent, and so you identify with the characters. The guy that really grinds my gears is the narrator, who has an accent that is a mixture of Apu and Scottish. I'm not racist, but you'll see what I mean, that shit's annoying. ANd another thing, Final Fantasy has always had their characters about my age or older. This time, the characters are pre-pubescent, and they're voices are deeper than mine! It takes about 2 hours to finally get used to how awkward this is.Tue, 06 Feb 2007 21:31:07 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1143&iddiary=2460Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Fri, 02 Feb 2007 00:32:57https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1091I remember now that what made Goldeneye was the mutliplayer mode. The single player mode is still sick, but (its emarassing to say) its harder than I remember. It's cool that some of the levels try to emphasize covertness, but you are almost always discovered anyways, so I see no point in trying to build up the suspense. I think the weapon of choice that will have you blasting your way through the levels is the gun that looks like a giant pencil. What I remember about this game doing a good job on was the excellent design execution of the objects that you need to use. Magnet attract watches, or using a laser from your watch still entertains me when you are using it on an evil Russian. Lastly, their sound department did an amazing job, not only the sound effects, which include footsteps, or glass breaking, but also the music lives up to the Bond,...James Bond.Fri, 02 Feb 2007 00:32:57 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1091&iddiary=2424mario 64 (N64) - Fri, 02 Feb 2007 00:21:43https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1090I can see now why Super Mario 64 is considered to be one of the greatest games of all time. I spent nearly an hour on a level just exploring and trying to find as many red coins and hidden mushrooms as I could. It's not so much that the levels are huge, it's the fact that the world is so interactive with the player. this is a game that will easily take weeks to master, even for the most diehard of gameplayers. It was interesting how the professor noted the importance of the camera angle, because that was what I found to be indeed the most frustrating. Especially when it comes to moving platforms. You jump using one camera angle, and then land using another one, all the while, trying to compensate your movement. One thing that I totally didn't notice until now, was that there was no load time. the gameplay is so seamless and nowadays, it is customary for your level to have to load. Even the score which is cheesy at some points, still has me humming along to some of the levels.Fri, 02 Feb 2007 00:21:43 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1090&iddiary=2423mario 64 (N64) - Thu, 01 Feb 2007 18:11:55https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1090Ahhh mario 64, the last great monopoly of a platformer by Nintendo. I remember being amazed at how expansive this game is and it's worlds. Nevertheless, this game was ridiculous in terms of getting used to the 3-D world and the joystick. I think I am used to being able to go super fast in Mario games, so I was a little dissapointed when I kept dying every 2 minutes for not moving the joystick just right. It really is mind-boggling when you see old enemies of Mario in 3 dimensions. What I also loved was how some of the game design were exaggerated just right to make the whole game fun. For example, when you smoosh a goomba, the goomba expands horizontally like it's a marshmellow gettin squished. The graphics arent realistic, but that is overshadowed by the amazing cartoon feel you get from the game, which are inherent in all Mario games. I will have to play more of this to get a better feel for the game.Thu, 01 Feb 2007 18:11:55 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1090&iddiary=2411Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Thu, 01 Feb 2007 17:59:00https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1091Providence looked kindly upon me when I played this game for the first time in 7+ years, because I immediately was able to play with 2 other people. The trash talking that is perpetuated is priceless, especially when a person gets a luck hit, or are just plained skilled like me! It's funny how our favorite level was Stack, the one that looks like an empty warehouse an has green and silver walls. It is the easiest one to roam around in, and the easiest to memorize the paths in the level. When playing, the N64 controller seemed to me to be a little difficult, especially mastering the joystick. It is not as smooth as a PS2 controller or an Xbox controller. If you start off with multiplayer, I owuld recommend starting off with pistols as the weapon choice so that you can master the controls, and learn how to master strafing. Once you are able to move properly, it will defintely make you a better player, because then you will be able to aim properly too. Once you get bored then you can start having some fun! My favorite is the under appreciated Golden Gun setting; one hit kills!Thu, 01 Feb 2007 17:59:00 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1091&iddiary=2410
