64>360's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=268mario 64 (N64) - Fri, 23 Feb 2007 17:32:56https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1447The next time around, I looked at the game from more of a technical aspect. Some things I noticed were that the game has good collision detection. The supposed "bounding box" around Mario is true to his form and most of the time I was able to get him around oppponents without being trapped. I say most of the time because I did find one instance of some clipping. In the second door, Mario is climbing up a slope and I found that if the camera angle is changed to zoom in Mario seems to be floating in the air and all that is shown on the screen is the background of the clouds. Since I am making a platform game similiar to Mario, I found it very helpful to play a game like this in order to get ideas for different kinds of obstacles the player has to overcome. One thing I am going to incorporate in my game is a more realistic bounding box since my main character sprite is not an even geometrical shape. I hope this allows for truer collision detection.Fri, 23 Feb 2007 17:32:56 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1447&iddiary=3053mario 64 (N64) - Fri, 23 Feb 2007 17:25:21https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1447This was my first time playing Super Mario 64. My first impressions of the game were that it has good graphics and lots of bvibrant colors. I ran around a bit outside the castle and tried swimming. I found the controls very easy to learn, and I really like how you can change the camera angles. I mostly opted out of the text that pops up as you enter the castle and went straight to the first door. I like the movement Mario has in the game: he runs smoothly and the gravity was well programmed. The first challenge was fair and is a good way for beginning players to learn the game.Fri, 23 Feb 2007 17:25:21 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1447&iddiary=3051Diddy Kong Racing (N64) - Fri, 09 Feb 2007 14:25:38https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1246The second time I played this game I followed the single player story mode. I think this game progresses through each task very well. The design of this game is fun, light and youthful. I like how the designers made the game about racing and not about violence. I like that the designers took time to design each character to have a slightly different style in each craft. For example, the heavier characters slide out a bit in the go kart but are more solid through turns in the airplane. The breadth of levels and changes of scenery from ocean paradises to small snowy villages makes this game interesting and enjoyable for a long time. The overall play of the game was well designed because of the amount of things to do in the game. Once a player has beat the game in story mode, he or she can practice getting faster times in a variety of different vehicles in a single race or in a series of races called a Trophy Race. The multiplayer provides hours of entertainment allowing players to race or depending on how many levels have been unlocked, play in various multiplayer challenges.Fri, 09 Feb 2007 14:25:38 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1246&iddiary=2651Diddy Kong Racing (N64) - Fri, 09 Feb 2007 14:25:25https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1246Diddy Kong racing for Nintendo 64 is a very well designed, fun to play title for the N64. I like the opening scene that shows Diddy Kong flying in to the fantasy land. The first level I played was the course called Ancient Lake. I played this in multiplayer and also in time trials. This level has a very simple circular design. Balloons containing bombs and boosters are easy to find and spread out with just the right amount of space. I like how the car slows down when the racer goes off the track and crawls when in the water. In order to shave time off to get a very low time, I’ve found that there are ways to get a maximum boost when flying over zippers. This level was also designed with a few shortcuts and when I tried them, I was able to win by a hair. (This entry has been edited1 time. This is an interesting idea for a multiplayer setup and since both players are not playing at the same time I used the two player mode to give me more lives and therefore chances to experience the game. I spent more time exploring the first level and found some interesting tricks that can be triggered to achieve better results. For example, if you jump on a certain type of enemy his shell remains in the playing field and Mario is able to bounce it against blocks allowing access to new boxes that can be popped to reveal flowers or mushrooms. The strategy that I picked up on was to keep amassing flowers until Mario became some sort of animal like character with ears and a tail. This allowed me to remove enemies by pressing the “b” button which swung Mario’s tail. After exploring and defeating a couple more levels I advanced to a bonus level that had me trying to line up pictures that were segmented in order to restore them to a complete picture. I found this very difficult because once the button was pressed on the controller; the picture on the screen was not immediately stopped. I also went into some kind of room that allowed me to open one of three treasure chests. I found this game to be very entertaining despite the simple outdated graphics. The game has an easy to understand story, Mario and Luigi are the perfect non discriminating heroes and the enemies are not that threatening. The game is not violent and involves more strategy than fighting. When I watched my friend play he was able to trigger boxes to be destroyed and enter secret rooms that are almost like separate levels upon themselves. It was clever for the game designers to include this into the game because it allows the experienced player new possibilities in game play.Tue, 30 Jan 2007 17:32:58 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=956&iddiary=2090Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Tue, 30 Jan 2007 17:32:09https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=956Connecting the NES was a bit complicated and after a half hour of trying different connections between the console and the television I was able to get it to work. Super Mario Bros III started out with a map that was grainy but pretty easy to understand. I advanced Mario to the first level and began to play. My initial impression of the game was that the controls were very easy to use and the game was easy to understand but the timing was hard to master. It was tricky to get Mario to jump and land at just the spot to collide with the enemies. It was impossible to get Mario to stop on a dime. I exhausted the four lives that you are allowed in one game pretty quickly. Once I got a hang of it I was able to get through the first level pretty easily. For the most, I ran through the level and didn’t take the time to notice the characteristics of each enemy; I also didn’t try to break any of the boxes to capture coins. When I ran out of lives the second time I had advanced through the first three levels. To my dismay I realized that Mario has to start back at level 1 when the screen reads “game over.” This discouraged me and I turned off the game to write this game log.Tue, 30 Jan 2007 17:32:09 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=956&iddiary=2089Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) - Fri, 19 Jan 2007 14:45:47https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=809After writing my first game log, I choose to go back and play but not follow the story line. I found a cheat code on the internet that gave me infinite ammo and access to every weapon in the game. Also I put in a cheat that gave me almost 150,000 dollars. This made game play really fun for awhile because I was able to go and eat and beef up my characters energy level. Then I found a bike and rode it around some half-pipes for awhile to build up CJ’s stamina and balance level. I had read on the internet that you could do drive-bys from a car, so I stole a cab and practiced doing this. It is fun to go around on a killing rampage, shooting at innocent people and police. I can see that this can be almost like a game on its own. For the next hour I took turns trading off with my friend to see who could get the most wanted stars. I found it very entertaining that with each new star, a new type of law enforcement comes after you. I was only able to get three or four stars and have a helicopter come for me but my friend was able to get the army to come in a tank for him. Overall I liked this game. I liked the map and the progression of the story. This game is obviously fantasy and is very loosely based on any kind of gang life or living in the hood. The game provided for great escape and allows the player to play out car chases, murders, and all the things that bad guys do.Fri, 19 Jan 2007 14:45:47 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=809&iddiary=1794Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) - Fri, 19 Jan 2007 14:32:48https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=809For my second game log, I choose to play GTA from the classics list. My immediate reactions were that the game had very good graphics and that the characters spoke with realistic and used urban slang. I found the initial progression of the game to be a bit slow. When the main character, CJ reunites with his fellow gang members his first few missions involve running away from a rival gang and breaking up a crack den. I know that GTA was a pioneer in this life like style of rpg and it shows in GTA San Andreas. Some of the things I liked about game play were: Being able to run around almost anywhere that gravity would allow for, Being able to break into any car, being able to start fights with random people on the streets and being able to run, drive, ride a bike, or drive a boat. It was hard to really get into this game because I did not have a memory card. This kept me from being able to save the game as I progressed throughout the missions. With this in mind, I tried to complete as many missions as I could until I became stuck on one in which CJ drives his homies to get chicken and runs into rival gang members.Fri, 19 Jan 2007 14:32:48 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=809&iddiary=1792Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Fri, 12 Jan 2007 15:52:05https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=608The second time I tried to pay more attention to the details of the game. I played more of the levels and didn’t skip over any of the story scenes. The obvious main character, James Bond, follows through the game just like the feature film. I like the bond that is displayed in the game. The other characters do a good job of giving justice to their personality in the game. For example the computer programmer Boris, is scared and nervous when Bond is around him. In the game, Boris jumps and raises his hands in submission when Bond comes to him and requests a copy of a Goldeneye key. This makes the game seem more real and makes it more fun to play. I was able to breeze through a few more levels on the agent level, and got bored. I played with a friend on the multi player mode and this time we played with remote mines. This is a very fun mode to play in because players are able to lay minds all around the level and set traps. I was dying a lot at first because my opponent would corner me into a room making it so the only way for me to get out was by going through the mines. Eventually I “learned” that when such situations arose I could throw out a remote mine of my own and it would set off all the ones he had laid. I took this a step farther when remote mines were the only weapon he had against me. I would wait until he had used them all up by laying them in an area and then I went close enough to get him to set them off then backed away. This caused him to set off the mines and I was able to go in and kill him easily because he was defenseless. Developing new strategies are one of the features that this game allows that make it so much fun. Fri, 12 Jan 2007 15:52:05 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=608&iddiary=1427Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Fri, 12 Jan 2007 14:07:00https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=608I took advantage of the opportunity we have to rent systems and checked out n64. This was my first time playing this system in a while and it had been awhile since I played Goldeneye. I love everything about this game. The story is believable and I like the flow of levels. I played the first two levels with the intention to unlock more levels for the multi player mode. I consider the dam to be a very easy level. Most of the guards are quickly able to be shot and the mission is pretty simple in agent mode. The graphics for Goldeneye amazed me when I first saw the game but now that I have seen future graphics in systems I notice that the characters faces seem a little too round. The choice of guns is very simple; I prefer using the automatic because it allows me to take out the guards faster. The multi player mode has always been my favorite part of the game. As soon as I started playing it, my memory of the multi player levels came back and I realized that I had memorized most of the levels throughout the game. I was playing against a friend who was on the same skill level as me. We played with automatic weapons in the facility. This level works well for two people but is a bit limited. Characters can only move from the beginning of the game to a quarter of the way through the level. It was easy to remember where the rcp90 was located and since my friend and I both had experience playing it was only a matter of time before we both had these powerful weapons and game play turned into a battle of who could hold the trigger button down longer. The two problems I have with multi player are the auto focus of a weapon and the aiming. It would be nice if the player had to actually manually aim the gun at another player in order to shoot him. I would also like it if the aim was a little more accurate. Apart from that it is a really great game and my favorite for the n64 platform.Fri, 12 Jan 2007 14:07:00 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=608&iddiary=1398
