Kareen's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=687Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 05:38:02https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3195GAMELOG ENTRY #2 GAMEPLAY My gameplay this time around was a bit easier because of the fact that I had a better sense on how to use the Wii controls. The narrative progression of the story was not faster than in my first gameplay experience. I did however enjoy how I continued to get little scenes of the story, instead of only getting text. I found it rather enjoyable to be able to roam around freely, very different from the previous Mario games as well. Although it is enjoyable to be able to freely roam around, it can also make the level be a little longer. It is easier to miss something because of the fact that Mario can head in every direction. I really enjoyed seeing new characters as I kept progressing through levels. I felt that there was a good variety of characters, and not just the same characters just in different colors. The game presents a challenge but it is not difficult. The game and it’s story line flows, so it is very enjoyable to play. DESIGN I am a very big fan of the Mario games. Because of that I played this game and saw so many differences to other Mario games. One of the biggest difference is the ability to be able to roam freely in every direction and not just left to right. The game also took a step forward in narrative development. It continually adds to the development of the narrative instead of just presenting the story in the beginning and then not seeing any more narrative progression until the end. Like previously mentioned earlier, the player has the ability to freely roam. Which is really good, but there was something about that that I did not find particularly pleasant. When Mario is running down the side of a planet, the camera will not change it’s angle for a while. So for a while I will be seeing Mario running sideways or upside down. I found myself slightly moving my head to better be able to see things. This design element is not bad but I did become a bit annoyed by it at times. As mentioned in my first entry for this game, I had my first Wii playing experience with this game and I am very glad that that was so. The game is very fun to play. I’ve seen the development of Mario games through the years and I am very impressed with this one.Thu, 06 Mar 2008 05:38:02 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3195&iddiary=6006Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 05:37:10https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3195GAMELOG #1 SUMMARY Super Mario Galaxy is a 3D platform game created for the Nintendo Wii. Once again, like in most Mario games, Princess Peach is kidnapped by Mario’s arch-nemesis, Bowser. To be able to rescue Princess Peach, Mario needs to go to different galaxies with different planetoids. GAMEPLAY Playing this game was particularly interesting since it was also my first time playing the Nintendo Wii. Because of the fact that it was my first time using this console, there was a bit more of a challenge presented in playing the game because I also needed to learn how the controls worked. Aside from that I noticed that there are MANY similarities in the game to previous Mario games. The characters all still look the same, with the addition of a few new characters. Aside from the addition of characters, I also noticed that this game has more text than previous Mario games. The game opens up with a story line and we see how Bowser kidnaps the princess. As I was playing the game I knew what it was I needed to do because I was told by other characters. When I came up to them they would tell me (through text, because the characters is Mario games don’t speak) what I needed to do and how to do it; another thing also particularly different to other Mario games. This contributed to flow of the game. The characters helped develop the narrative of the story and created flow in the levels. The game was really interesting and fun to play. It was a very enjoyable experience. My interaction with the narrative development of the story is also greater this time around. Besides learning the story from the characters, I actually have the option as to what to respond when I am asked a question. This changes the story slightly, but not greatly. My interest and entertainment level of the game has also increased. I suppose because this time around I have a better hang of how the game works. A problem I initially faced was that I kept dying whenever I fought Blue Imps, Rolies, and other evil creatures in the kingdom. This led me to have to start from the very beginning of the game, especially because I continued to keep forgetting to save. This slowed down my game playing a lot. But once I remembered to save and once I figured out how to attack and heal, I was fine. DESIGN The levels of the game are determined by the different eras. Throughout the game Chrono is traveling through time, each new era is a different level. As one continues to progress on levels, they also become more difficult. One way in which the game increases the level difficulty of the game is by adding tougher evil creatures which one must fight. Aside from the fact that the creatures become stronger, at times one will be facing a larger amount. The player is led to have to keep an eye open for items that help Chrono, such as power gloves and tonics. Along with that, to be able to better defeat creatures, Chrono needs stronger weapons. The weapons can be bought at Markets and with Tradesmen. However, one does not have any money, which is referred to as “GP” in the game. Every time one defeats a battle, Chrono attains more GP and such things as experience points and tech points, all which help make Chrono stronger. The increase in the challenge helps keep the player interested. Originally I wasn’t too crazy about the game, but as I began to get farther along I found that I actually do enjoy this game.Fri, 22 Feb 2008 01:15:59 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2927&iddiary=5519Chrono Trigger (SNES) - Fri, 22 Feb 2008 01:15:12https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2927Gamelog Entry #1 SUMMARY Chrono Trigger is a role-playing game in which the player controls the protagonist-Chrono. Throughout the game Chrono is traveling through time in search of his friend Marleen, who gets teleported to another era through Lucca‘s (another character in the game) teleport invention. As Chrono is in search of Marleen, the story of her disappearance and relation to the Kingdom of Guardia is revealed. GAMEPLAY Chrono Trigger is different to other games that I’ve played in the sense that it is set in 1000 A.D. and earlier centuries. The narrative development of the game is done through other characters. As one walks around the kingdom one comes across other characters who share information about the kingdom and help develop the story. There is no particular order in which one must interact with other characters, the story develops equally well regardless of the order in which one interacts with the other characters. The fact that the game develops as one interacts with the characters makes the game go by a bit slower. For me this is actually discouraging from wanting to continue the game, I prefer faster paced games. But I did enjoy the fact that I was able to roam freely and things still made sense. The story at this point is quite interesting. At this point Chrono’s friend Marleen, who he met at the Millennial Fair, has disappeared to another place through the teleport machine that another character, Lucca, invented. I felt that this was a good place to stop my gameplay because the suspense of Marleen’s disappearance is encouraging to continue playing. Due to technical problems, i was unable to save changes in the other entry********************* SUMMARY Super Mario World is a 2D platform game. The game consists of 9 different worlds with 96 levels within them. While Mario and Luigi are away on vacation to “Dinosaur Land,” Bowser once again kidnaps Prince Toadstool (Peach). Throughout the course of the game, the player goes from the different levels and worlds, all of which become more difficult as the game progresses. Passing each level and moving on to each world gets the player closer to Bowser and rescuing Princess Toadstool (Peach). The practice provided in each level helps improve the players game skill to better be able to defeat Bowser. GAMEPLAY Throughout my gameplay I found myself to be in a very relaxed and calm state of mind. I’m sure that much of that had to due to the fact that playing this game for the first time after so many years brought me back to a sense of childhood. Aside from that, the music in the game gets one to a “joyful” frame of mind. The colors also add to the mood of the game. The game consists of vibrant and rainbow colors. It is very clear just from the music and look of the game that it is intended, but not limited, to kids. The characters in the story also add to the “childhood-like” atmosphere. One might even say that characters are cute. Mario is a short little man with a red hat and t-shirt in overalls. Whenever he dies or is injured he doesn’t die a horrible death, he merely jumps up and his eyes turn into “X’s.” There are also mushrooms that aid Mario. These mushrooms are either green or red and have very simple, but friendly, faces. Throughout the entire course of the game the player continues to come across other characters, mostly helpers of Bowser, who attempt to slow down and hurt Mario. If the player kills (with the simple action of jumping on them, with no blood spilled) these characters, the player earns points and receives an overall higher score. The game is simple, but fun to play.Sat, 26 Jan 2008 05:28:45 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2280&iddiary=4379Super Mario World (SNES) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 04:24:28https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2280GAMELOG #2 GAMEPLAY Like the first time playing, the second time around was just as enjoyable. Much of that is due to the game’s simplicity, unlike other more complex games that require the player to really think about their actions and how to get from one location to the other. In this game, there is only one direction to go, so it is impossible to get lost. Although the game is so simple, it is still very fun and interesting to play because of the simple tasks the player must accomplish. Although there is a story to the game, it is not developed. All the player knows is that Princess Toadstool (Peach) was kidnapped by Bowser and that now it is Mario’s job, along with the help of Yoshi the Dinosaur, to rescue her. There really isn’t any narration going on through the course of the game, which is another element of the games simplicity. DESIGN Unlike other games where before even starting the game the player must choose the level of difficulty, this game does not have that option. As the player keeps going from level to level, the difficulty of them increase. Even so, the levels are still rather easy. The levels differ because the geography of them is different. For example, there are levels that are mainly composed of cliffs and balance beams, there are underwater levels, others located in the sky where you jump from cloud to cloud, and others. The game keeps the player interested not only because of the fact that there is variety in the levels, but because there are many small and simple tasks that the player must accomplish. The largest challenge is obviously defeating Bowser. Doing this does not allow the game to become a drag. (This entry has been edited1 time. It is set in an underwater city (Rapture) during 1960. It consist of going through different levels in which the player upgrades and strengthens their weapons and plasmids. During the game the player (character [Jack]) is helping seek revenge for a stranger's murdered family. GAMEPLAY From the very beginning of the game, I was scared. Throughout the game the player goes from location to locations that are practically abandoned, with the exception of some scary-looking characters (Splicers) looking to kill the playing character, Jack. As I was heading from one place to the other, I had to keep a lookout for Splicers, but they still managed to pop out at the most random times and get my heart racing. The setting of the game is very cold and horrific. The story and narrative progression of the game is very good. One of the main character's in the game is Andrew Ryan- ruler and developer of Rapture. Throughout the course of the game one learns more about Andrew Ryan, the development of the city, what went wrong in the city, and other characters. GAMELOG ENTRY #2 GAMEPLAY The second time around I was obviously more familiar with how everything worked. I did not become as jumpy as I had the first time playing. I still however felt the same level of excitement in the game. As I kept progressing from one level to the other, the Splicers became stronger and more difficult to kill. Listening to audio diary entries of some of the victims is essential in the development of the story and to be able to get certain codes that are needed on some levels, I realized this playing the second time around. I enjoyed playing this game a lot. It is one of the first video games I’ve played. I found it to be interesting and fun to play. It is a very exciting game in the sense that you don't know when something or someone is going to appear and try to kill you. The fact that it also has a very good story only adds more to the game as a whole. The story has some very interesting twists, along with a very interesting plot point. I particularly enjoyed the story twisters. It is a one-player game, but it's still very fun to play with your friends as viewers, because they can enjoy the story just as well. DESIGN The game does a good job at keeping the player interested by setting goals. Although there is one main goal in the game, throughout the course of the game there are minor goals. These goals help strengthen Jack and his weapons, plasmids, and give hints. As previously mentioned, the audio diaries are the story being told from the perspective of a victim. They help develop the plot, and its understanding. The tone of the gameworld is eerie. All of locations have corpses (some [disturbingly] mutilated) lying about. The are blood spills and splattering on walls, furniture, plants, etc. Also lying about are knives, scissors, scalpels, guns, and razors. There are points in the game where 50’s music such as jazz and orchestra begins to play. This music is usually very enjoyable, except when set in the dark environment that the game is. The bots also have a very large influence in the tone setting. There are times when one comes across characters that are psycho and may be talking to themselves, tending to a toy baby, dancing, or mutilating a corpse. For someone who likes horror and suspense, this can be a very enjoyable game. Tue, 15 Jan 2008 03:10:25 CSThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1880&iddiary=3787
