I've only been playing for about an hour, but I just wanted to jot down a couple of notes about the combat system amongst other things.
I can't really say much yet, but I can say one thing...it's so cute when your party dances after they've won a battle!
The only complaint I have as of yet is that there are just TOO many random battles. I can't get anywhere for heaven's sake, I can hardly move an inch on the map because I keep finding myself going up against zombies and wolves and
such. Can we take a break with the battles please?
Speaking of battles, here are my notes on the combat system so far:
Combat
--------
* turn-based
* Random battles + boss battles
* At the beginning of each turn, the player selects one of the following
actions for each character in their party:
Attack: select which enemy to receive the attack
Magic: select a spell to use
Items: select potions to heal yourself, etc.
Equip: equip yourself with a weapon (swords, daggers, etc.)
Flee: run from battle
* After all characters have completed their actions, each monster in the
enemy party attacks one of the characters in the player's party
* Battle continues until one of the parties is defeated: if the enemy
party is defeated, the player receives experience and money (gil) and
returns to the map; if the player's party flees, the player returns to
the map; if the player's party is defeated, the game is over
It felt a little unnatural that when you've chosen to attack a specific monster and he happens to have been already defeated by another of your own player (after you've chosen to attack him), that your attack (which would have been directed at the now defeated monster) is now directed at the next monster in the enemy party. So I looked up version differences on Wikipedia, and this is what I discovered:
*"In the original NES version, it was not possible to select a new enemy to attack once actions had begun; if the character had chosen to attack an enemy who had been defeated earlier in the round, then the attack was ineffective, and the character did nothing. This was changed in later versions." (Wikipedia)
