Picking up the game agin this morning, I decided to forgo the storyline for now and just try some free play. I found the violence and language to be as bad as others have described it. You can't walk down the road without someone cussing you out, or vise versa. I also found there to be essentially no consequences to any actions you make in the game. If you kill someone usually nothing happens, you can steal cars, destroy signs, fences, posts, etc and the worst that can happen is you get caught by the cops or you get “killed” which is nothing more than a trip to the local hospital. Sure you lose your weapons and a little cash, but in the end it takes 2 seconds and you're out already (at least 2 seconds in gameplay time).
Prostitutes solicit if you're in a car nearby, and people sometimes try to steal your car, pulling you out and fighting. The violence is pretty intense. Not only do you fight someone till they're on the ground, you have to finish them off or they'll come back after you. Stomping on them, knifing them on the ground, whatever the case may be its brutal and senseless, all the time cursing at them even just after killing them.

I sat down to play GTA San Andreas for the first time in a new game with little expectations, since not having played any other GTA games in the series before today. The storyline begins with Carl who hears word of his mother’s death and decides to head home. Carl has liven on the east coast for five years and is now heading back to San Andreas. He hails a taxi and is pulled over by the police who arrest him for no reason. They drive him away and through dialogue, we get the idea that they’ve known him for quite some time and even try to jokingly frame him for a couple of recent crimes. This all paints a picture of Carl as an abused person who is also grieving his mother’s death. Perhaps this is seen as justification for the crimes he pays throughout the movie. Because others have wronged him, he has the right to act as he does.
There are some racial remarks made even in the very beginning from one cop bearing negative connotations to Mexicans. Carl is dropped off in a rival neighborhood and must get back to his area. His actions include stealing a bike, and finally a car to avoid being shot by the rival gang. When he gets back he meets with his family and realizes just how bad things have gotten. Many of the people he knew before have been killed. At the cemetery, visiting his mother’s grave, there’s a drive-by shooting and his buddy Smoke’s car is destroyed. Everyone quickly jumps on a bike nearby and races off to get back into safe territory. Carl then goes to see his friend Ryder who mentions something about teaching a lesson to a pizza shop owner. Carl goes and gets a haircut, then heads over to the pizza shop, where Ryder attempts to hold it up for cash. The owner pulls a shotgun on them and starts shooting. Ryder and Carl flee back to his house by taking his Ryder’s car.
