    Jan 16th, 2010 at 14:06:44     -    Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (PS2)

For my second time playing Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas, I decided to pass on trying to advance the story and instead explored the world of the game. My first goal was to get a car, but I didn't think about trying to find an abandoned car or even buying one. My first thought was to steal the car of the first person that I encountered. I wondered if it was the game mechanics that made me thing that way. Since you aren't punished for car-jacking, I immediately figured it was the fastest way to get a car.

While driving around, I hit a few cars and a few pedestrians. Again, I didn't really think about the consequences since the game allows you to get away with it. While driving recklessly, I flipped my car over in the middle of the street. I already knew what happens when your car flips over, so I quickly abandoned the car and ran away for it. After the resulting explosion, which took out more cars and more pedestrians, I again felt nothing. Perhaps it was just because its a video game and no one really got hurt. I didn't even care that I had lost my car since I could just steal another one.

I was surprised to see that an ambulance arrived on the scene shortly after the explosion. Thinking that I've already shown myself to be a giant jerk, I stole the ambulance as the people got out of it to help the victims. I drove around in the ambulance for a while doing as much damage as I could and not even thinking about the consequences. I wondered if my previous experiences with games left me completely desensitized to anything I could do in GTA:SA.

Soon, I started to hear police sirens. I noticed that I had two stars, so I tried to avoid them for a while. Eventually, after making a bad turn, I was stuck. A police officer cornered me and I knew what would happen if I let him take me in. This is why I punched him in the face. If it was between killing a cop and getting a "game over" by going to the jail and losing money, I would have rather killed the cop. After killing the cop, I tried to run away again. However, it became harder and harder to avoid all the authority figures after me. Eventually, I was cornered and caught.

The first thing I do after I get out of jail? I steal someone's car, of course. I used it to drive home and save the game, ending my second day with GTA:SA.

    Jan 13th, 2010 at 22:38:11     -    Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (PS2)

For the first time today, I played Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I knew about the game and have heard a lot about GTA in general, but I had never actually sat down and played GTA:SA before. Just from looking at the box-art and seeing the initial loading screen with the gang/thug imagery, I knew that this was going to be an intense game.

The game opened with the main character, CJ, getting arrested. I could already tell that I wouldn't be playing as the stereotypical goody-two-shoes here. I was then given my first mission, which was to get on a bike and ride to a certain location. Since CJ isn't really a good guy, I decided to ride my bike into a female pedestrian. I was surprised to see it had killed her. I thought that was pretty cool. Shortly after that, I was encountered by a group of thugs. I tried to run away, but they beat me down and killed me. I guess that's what they call karma.

After being revived at the hospital, I stole someone's car and drove to the checkpoint. Of course, along the way, I "accidentally" ran over a few people. I like that the game really allows you to act however you want. Then I met with a friend, Big Sweet, and after that, we met with a larger group of friends. It was at this point the intense language in the game really jumped out at me. We were then attacked by another gang and forced to bike away.

Later on, I met with Ryder, and together, we drove to the barbershop. More innocents also died on my joyride. After getting an afro, we went to get some food. Ryder tried to hold up the pizza place and the cashier attacked us. Angry that I was getting shot at, I took out my frustrations on the cashier by killing him and taking his shotgun. After that, I went home and saved the game.

That's all for Day 1. It was an interesting experience overall. There's a lot of freedom to do whatever you want in the game, and it's good that the consequences of your actions can change your experience with the game.
