Today was my first day of playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and so far I have completed 4 missions. From what I can tell, the missions so far are very linear in terms of what you can do and what decisions you can make. The first mission of the game had me take a bike to CJ’s house. I thought that it was pretty convenient that there was a bike located nearby so I took it. I had little regard for who it belonged to because I wanted to advance the story. Upon entering CJ’s house I was greeted by a burly black man wielding a baseball bat. I was slightly startled thinking that I would have to fight someone for breaking and entering. Fortunately all was well because CJ’s apparently knows the man, named Big Smoke. As I began the second mission I realized that, so far, the only people that have been friendly to CJ were the people that lived in his neighborhood (some more than others of course). The police were very early in the story categorized as antagonists based on their treatment of CJ and their racism. The second mission also involved me stealing a conveniently placed bike in order to escape a rival gang drive by shooting. It was all I could do, I couldn’t talk to the rival gang and I couldn’t fight them either. Run or die (which actually did happen on my first try and I was introduced to San Andreas’ healthcare system. Instead of running all the way back to the house I remembered that I could steal cars. So in order to advance the story quicker I stole a truck and drove back.) for reasons I didn’t quite understand. By this point I was starting to think differently. I could steal that car over there or punch that guy over there in the face. I could see why this game is so controversial. The third mission was slightly less violent than the last one. I was to take a car into town and get a haircut. I gave CJ an afro and a beard, classy. Afterwards the game instructed me to go to the pizza place across the street and eat. After the meal Ryder unexpectedly pulled out his gun and pointed it at the cashier to which the cashier pulled out a shotgun forcing me to run away from gunfire yet again. San Andreas is a pretty violent place, isn’t it? The last mission of the day was to go into town and spray paint over rival gang tags with little regard for the legality of such actions. The last tag was more difficult than the other ones because some of the gang members were hanging around it. The game said that I should use the spray paint in their faces to which I promptly complied and completed the mission.
