Sep 30th, 2003 at 22:01:47 - Silent Hill (PS) |
I watched Silent Hill 2 the other day and was amazed at how well they played on player expectations from other horror forms (movies, books, etc.). Since I don't have an Xbox of my own, (yes, I know, I could pick up the PS2 version, but the XBox one's prettier) and since I saw a lonely copy of the original at EB, I picked it up to give it a whirl. In some respects, I think SH2 makes better use of suspense and has creepier monster designs. (Monsters based on inanimate objects or vaguely humanoid things, rather than SH's more Parasite Eve style pterodactyl and caninoid beasts.) But I'm still only a few hours into the game, so I expect things will get significantly spookier.

Stuff I wrote the other day that doesn't really fit in the description:
Having heard many times that FFT is one of the best games available for PlayStation, I finally managed to pick up a copy on the cheap (yeah, I'm all about the cheap old stuff). I haven't got especially deep into the job system, which is one of the game's primary features, but hope to get into it soon. (Makes it hard when its outside any of my specific research areas.) I'm hoping to put a reasonable amount of time into it before getting into Tactics Advance so I have a solid basis from which to compare the two.

It's soooo hard to increase my stats. I'm considering just using the Konamiman code so I can get all my stats buffed into the 500s. Of course, it doesn't help that so far the only girl I've found interesting is Shiori, the girl next door with impossible to meet standards. (Art mirrors life?)
I still need to investigate the effects of club membership on how much the girls like you. I'm guessing the greatest effect comes when you join a club one of the girls is in, but at the moment I'm stalled trying to see if there's anyone whose heart I'd like to win with this save. I figure I'll do a separate save to try and win over Shiori, though I just might have good enough stats that I can just branch into multiple saves from where I'm at. And my guy insists on talking with Shiori every time he sees her walking to or from school. (Unfortunately, I still haven't managed to decipher what they're saying.)

Stuck on my first skate challenge. Blasted bug-eyed dude! I can't seem to get down how to change direction while I begin a jump. It's probably a simple matter of timing, but we'll see.
Claiming new districts of Tokyo-to is easier than I'd anticipated. Crashing through walls is a nice bit of fun too. From what I've seen though, it's only a matter of time before I come across places where it's basically impossible to lay down all the tags. Hopefully I'll have a full stable by then and have some fun characters to just run around town with.
I'm missing the grind boost from JSRF. In JSR, grind speed depends upon the speed you're going when you start the grind. JSRF allows players to accelerate the grind along the way with a button press (and corresponding on-screen foot motion so it makes visual sense).
Talked with Jose a bit about another difference in JSRF.. Future changes the painting interactions. Where JSR has the player string together joystick moves to paint large tags, JSRF simply uses the paint button and requires sufficient paint. There's no sticking involved. That change loses a cool dynamic, but the JSRF level designs don't really support standing in one place tagging for very long. They take a more flyby approach. (Lots of large tags next to grinds, that kind of thing.)
