Jan 19th, 2007 at 03:28:06     -    Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

This is the grand master of all role playing games. Seriously. Dude.

Had some fun today by starting a new game, and played for a full hour. Managed to work my way through the upper layers of the Deku Tree. It took a while to find a sword... And, when I got it, I found its use a little awkward. The battles are marvelous, but it took me a while to pick up the use of the targeting button. Then there are the other challenges - the puzzle aspects of OoT are ingenius, though occasionally frustrating (I don't really like having to run around looking for the right treasure chest, but I kinda have to to make any progress). My whole xperienced was both enhanced and simplified by the other people chillin' in the room while I was playing (it seems like every other gamer in the world has seen this Zelda through to its finale). There were hints and cheers galore, though I would not otherwise consider OoT to be a particularly social game (not in the same way as, say, Guitar Hero or DDR).

    Jan 18th, 2007 at 03:05:09     -    Final Fantasy X (PS2)

Had this lovely detailed entry all typed up, and for some reason, it did not submit. So here I go again -

Got myself out of Besaid today. Spent about half an hour fighting Sin on a boat, and managed to save the crew, though sin went on to pillage our port of destination. Got all the way to the top of the last summoner's magic place (a couple more boss battles), he was this dude named Ohalland, and managed to get through a rather nasty puzzle. Lots of character development, which I absolutely love about RPGs. It's so much more interesting to have characters with human emotions and reactions. Yuna is my favorite character so far, for this reason. Tidus is endearing, in a lumpish oaf kind of way.

There was probably an hour's worth of cut scenes in today's session. A little bit frustrating, since watching is not playing. Still, it is satisfying to see the animations and such. The 'Sending' scene was particularly well done.

(I really wish I could find that first post...)
I find the most frustrating thing about the game to be that you cannot power through any of it. There are paths you must take, and rules (sometimes not quite rules - more like hints, though you can't beat the boss without knowing that he is sensitive to fire magic) you must follow. The sphere grid irks me the most. It is so separate from the other elements of the game... you can go from a great magical battle to a boring gray control screen in no time. I enjoy leveling up, and I enjoy the ability to chose in which direction I want them to be skilled. I do not enjoy the unusual way I have to break away from the storyline and objective to further my battle skills.

Can't remember what else I had written... But I covered most of my points.

    Jan 12th, 2007 at 14:17:34     -    Final Fantasy X (PS2)

Spent a couple hours last night (er... early this morning?)continuing on FFX. I had started a game last Friday, but the story was only 26 minutes in. The tale follows naive, and often annoying, sports star Tidus. He is mysteriously pulled from his game and usual lifestyle when his hometown is attacked by a creature called Sin. Slow tutorials explain each step, and as you move through the story and gain characters, more tutorials follow. I think I'm almost through learning from them now. Characters join and leave your party as they wish - I've already met Rikku, Wakka, Yuna, and Lulu. So far, The latter three are the ones fighting with Tidus. Apparently, we're now waiting for a ship.

The only part that I found somewhat complexing was the Sphere Grid. Like most FF games, you can steal and gain items in battle. When you succesfully defeat an enemy, you can gain several different types of spheres and, instead of a full character level, a sphere level. This tutorial I found slightly lacking - the explanations make the elementary linear scheme behind the sphere grid seem outright labyrinthine. I picked up the basics of the grid after some experimentation, and a little help from a more experienced player. Basically, it is a genius idea, that is just simpler than I initially suspected.

Overall, I found the learning curve to be rather gentle, and battles + bosses easy to defeat. I will probably continue playing this for a while yet, as the storyline intrigues me. I've played part of X-2 before, though X is new to me (and expontentially more fun than X-2).

    Jan 9th, 2007 at 03:22:57     -    Guitar Hero II (PS2)

Alrighty, so I picked this up for the first time on Friday, and totally sucked at it. Today was my second time playing and even the little experience I had had before helped. The controls, as unconventional as they are, are uniquely difficult to master. Still, it really does feel cool playing GH2, especially when doing well.

I kept it on easy mode, and completed a few songs with more than satisfactory scores. Wolfmother, Kiss, The Police, and a couple other bands... My skills are still piddling in comparison to the majority of my friends. Still, great fun can be had rockin' out with the guitar controller (I've found this to be easier when the controller has a strap. Take a wide stance, and dance around - I swear, it improved my score!). The game functions in much the same way as the original GH, although I have only ever watched the original version being played by someone else. You press the 'note' or 'chord' on the neck of the guitar and strum on beat. A meter is raised depending on how well you do, and once the meter is full, you can hold the guitar vertically, activating 'Star Power.' This power increases the multiplier on your score, and can dramatically enhance your win.

Overall, immensely enjoyable. Pretty simple to just pick up and start playing, considering how different the controller is. It is similar to many Bemani games in that the songs are of varying difficulty in themselves, and then each has a different version depending on the difficulty level you choose to play. I do have a bit of rhythm in me, so things worked out. As long as you can tap along to the music, you can play this game.
