During today's 30 minute play session, I decided I wanted to run a little test on possible sexism programmed into the game. As I covered in my last post, there ARE some pretty typical sexist comments mad during game-play (cop telling me to "stop running like a girl", etc.). But I made a rather odd observation; in absence of a gun, the women seem to fight back more often than the men when provoked. The only reason I say this is odd is because of how men and women are portrayed in the game. It seems like the men are more often than not trying to be tough or intimidating while the women are rather dainty and helpless looking. This observation led me to run a little in-game test. I decided to walk up and punch 10 females and 10 males (all on separate occasions with no wanted level and no weapons), and take note of who fought back. The victim of the punch is disqualified from the statistics if they pull out a weapon, or call upon the help of others. The overall results are actually kind of humorous I think. 5/10 men fought back, while 6/10 women fought back. The stats are too close to say that there developer meant to make a statement or anything, but it's kind of funny that more women stepped up and went toe-to-toe with a ripped thug than the men did. The rest of my play time was devoted solely to slaughter and jet-packing/parachuting off of high places. I just can't help myself.

After purchasing and installing the game from the XBL market, I fire it up and watch the intro cinematics. Immediately I'm thrust into a world of corruption (I mean, it is Grand Theft Auto after all). I get pulled over by corrupt cops who threaten to blackmail me, steal my money, and make racist comments towards the cab driver. It sets the tone for the following game play quite well. Upon being thrust from the squad car, I am prompted to get on a bicycle in front of me. There are cars driving everywhere around me, cars that I KNOW I can conquer with the simple tap of the "Y" button, but I decide to play it cool, and ride my bike around. Eventually I'm going too fast, downhill, and I collide with a gangster. All hell breaks loose. All the gangsters in the area begin open firing on me, and there is NO WAY I can escape without either breaking a law or cheating. Hell, I punched one of the guys shooting at me and I gained a wanted star. Cops just do not like me in that game. So I'm forced to steal a car and escape, running many other vehicles off the road in the process. From then on out I fell into a black hole of destruction and chaos. I looked up all the good cheats (weapons, health, jet pack, etc) and went to town, slaughtering everyone. I even had the mindset to NOT pointlessly destroy the world when I started the game, but I just couldn't do it. The game absolutely forces you into crime, makes you try to fix one crime with another, racking up stars until you have the military chasing after you. I was killed a few times (or, to be more accurate, "wasted"), and then I'd just go around punching people. I don't know why, but it was fun. Something I noticed is that when I punch a girl, they tend to fight back much more often than the men do (unless the men have guns). It's almost sexist when I see so many men backing down, but this 90 pound latina just throwing haymaker after haymaker at my face, going for the kill. On the note of sexism, more than once I was called a girl by police who were pursuing me. An interesting thing to try during tomorrow's play session: punch 5 random girls and 5 random guys and see how many times each fights back. Might produce interesting results. My entire play session was spent in random chaos, not even bothering to advance in the story. In conclusion, my first foray into Los Santos is one of seemingly unavoidable mass crime, chiefly murder, and (quite obviously) grand theft auto.
