Oct 6th, 2012 at 15:08:38     -    League of Legends (PC)

League of Legends is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game developed and published by Riot Games. It was first released on October 27, 2009. The genre of the game is a real-time strategy action game. Each player controls a single character and devices strategies with team members to beat the other team. There are three maps in the game called Fields of Justice. These maps are Summoner’s Rift, Twisted Treeline and Dominion. Players are formed into two even teams of three or five, depending on the map. For Summoner’s Rift and Twisted Treeline, the objective of League of Legends is to destroy opposing team’s Nexus. Along the way to the Nexus, players have to destroy series of Turrets. Each player gains levels and gold from killing the opposing team’s Minions and champions. Minions are constantly spawned and help the team progress toward the Nexus. The outcome of the game is zero-sum game. The team that destroys the Nexus will win and other team will lose.

The most important resource in the game is gold. With more gold, a player can purchase stronger and better items. Each player is limited with six inventory spaces; therefore, it is important to purchase right items for the situation and the character. Each player will power up as his or her character levels up. Each level up will increase character’s attack damage (AD), ability power (AP), health, and Mana. Also, a player can level up his or her character’s skills by leveling up. Each character has four distinctive skills and one passive feature. The skills become stronger as a player put more points into them. Maximum of five points can be put into three skills and maximum of three points can be put into one skill. Furthermore, players can power up by obtaining jungle buffs. In each side, there are two jungle buffs, one blue and one red buff. Blue buff gives a player lower cool down for skills and replenish mana. Red buff allows a player to slow and damage the other players’ characters by attacking them. The most important jungle buff is a baron buff. This buff given to the team that kills neutral monster called Baron Nashor. This buff gives massively increased attack damage and ability power as well as a bonus to health and mana regeneration to all the players in the team.

    Sep 27th, 2012 at 21:49:56     -    Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)

The previous game Kingdom Hearts and opening ten minute cut-scene of Kingdom Hearts II act as narrative descriptors. Without these two descriptors, a player will have difficult time understanding the story of the game. Also, Kingdom Hearts II, just like previous one, contains embedded narrative. The embedded narrative in the game is cinematic scenes or cut-scenes that connect the storyline. After a player finish a quest or battle, a brief cut scene is shown to a player. These scenes are very interesting and important feature of the game. Thus, Kingdom Hearts II is more of pure narrative game than pure mechanic game. However, a player does not have to watch all the cut-scenes. He or she has option to skip these cut-scenes. This feature is really useful because it allows a player to save time. Like any other games, a player can come up with his or her emergent narrative in Kingdom Hearts II. Personally, I had trouble finding a way to continue the game when I visited the Atlantica too soon. Therefore, my emergent narrative was how I can continue the game without further proceeding through the Atlantica. I could not figure it out by myself so I had to look at the game walkthrough to continue the game.

Kingdom Hearts II contains three difficulty levels, which are Beginner, Standard, and Proud mode. The beginner mode will be boring for a player that has high skills and abilities. On the other hand, the proud mode will be frustrating for a player that lacks skills and abilities. A player will have more enjoyable time if he or she can choose the mode that corresponds to his or her skills.

Finally, Kingdom Hearts II contains several storylines. The game has one overall storyline and several independent storylines that connect to overall story. The overall storyline is Sora tracking down Organization XIII to stop its plans and find his friend Riku. The independent storylines are more specifically dedicated to Disney themed worlds. For example, the storyline in Olympus Coliseum is mostly about Sora, Donald, and Goofy helping Hercules fight against Hades. The storyline in Olympus Coliseum and the overall storyline are connected by introducing a member from Organization XIII in Olympus Coliseum. A member from Organization XIII is causing problem in a world, and a player has to defeat one member at a time. Each storyline is comprised of exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement. For the independent storylines, Sora arriving at new world serves as exposition and Sora leaving this world after defeating the enemies serves as denouement.

    Sep 20th, 2012 at 22:19:13     -    Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)

Kingdom Hearts II includes various resources that a player can take advantage of. First, all the characters, like Sora, Donald, and Goofy, have health and mp. If characters, except for Sora, run out of health, they temporary cannot move and are out of action. They will automatically be brought back to action once sometime pass or can be healed back to life. However, if Sora’s health runs out, a player has choice of continuing the game or loading the game. If a player chooses to continue the game, he or she will be placed back before action took place. If a player decides to load the game, he or she will be located to last saved point. The characters’ HP increases as they level up. Also, if characters run out of MP, they no longer can use magic ability. This might be crucial for some characters that do heavy magic damage, like Donald. Another key resource in Kingdom Hearts II is currency system. If a player kills enemies like Heartless and Nobodies, he or she can collect Munnies. With these munnies, a player can buy items for his or her characters. A player can purchase weapons, armors, and rings for Donald and Goofy. Although a player can purchase armors and rings for Sora, he or she cannot buy weapons. These weapons, which are called keyblades, can only be obtained through defeating certain acts. Furthermore, each characters has inventory where a player can put items. Characters’ inventory space increases as they level up. The inventory contains weapon, armor, accessories, and items. In item place, a player can place health potions or ethers, which restores MP. Finally, actions of characters are limited through abilities a player equips to them. A player cannot equip all abilities because characters have limited AP. The AP can be increase as character levels up or use item called AP Boost or equip accessories that boost AP
    .
Kingdom Hearts II has clear opponents in the game. There are two opponents, one who controls heartless and organization XIII which controls nobodies. In Kingdom Hearts, there was only one opponent which was heartless. These enemies are computer controlled antagonists. Certainly, there are boundaries in which limit player’s actions. First, a player is limited to the Disney creation worlds that he or she has unlocked. This boundary limits a player from exploring worlds that he or she wants to. Also, there is boundary within a world. For example, if a player has to go specific direction to continue the story, he or she cannot enter places that are not the right path. The outcome of the game is very simple. A player must defeat final boss for him or her to finish the storyline. However, the game does not end when a player kills final boss. A player can still continue to play and level up his or her character.

    Sep 14th, 2012 at 01:14:20     -    Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)

The core mechanic of Kingdom Hearts II is exploring different Disney creation worlds like the Land of the Dragons which is the world of Mulan. Sora and his two buddies, Donald and Goofy are exploring different worlds in their quest to find his friend, Riku and King Mickey, and chase down organization XIII. The rule of the game is very simply. First, a player can only play as Sora. Also, a player has limited spaces to equip items and abilities. These spaces will increase as a character levels up. However, a player can increase the abilities spaces by finding item called AP boost. A player cannot just equip infinite number of items so he or she can dominate the game. Furthermore, there are some restrictions to which world a player must enter first before he or she can proceed to other areas. For example, Olympus Coliseum can only be unlocked after a player beat either The Beast’s Castle or The Land of Dragons. At the same time, the game provides some flexibility for a player to choose the world that he or she wants to explore first. For example, a player can choose either The Beast’s Castle or The Land of Dragons. He or she is not limited to just one place to defeat in order to proceed. The choosing right place to explore is one strategy that a player can devise. Also, one of the key strategies is determining which items and abilities are going to be equip to Sora, Donald, and Goofy. There are numerous other strategies that a player can come up with.

Kingdom Hearts II is single player vs. game, which means only one player can play the game. There are various objectives to the game. Kingdom Heart II contains element of chase, rescue or escape, and exploration. Sora, Donald, and Goofy are exploring various Disney create worlds rescuing these worlds from enemies and chasing down organization XIII and his friend Riku. The main objective is to beat the game by finishing off the final boss and find Riku and King Mickey. Personally, I have not gotten this far. There are also a variety of side objectives or player determined objectives. A player determined objectives might be becoming highest level. Another one might be collecting all the keyblades or other items. Right now, my objective is collecting much items as possible, specially the keyblades.
