Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is one of my absolute favorite console games of all time. The game has a wide range of components which make it extremely appealing and make it's replay value incredibly high. First and foremost, the game is very immersive. The single player campaign is fast paced and coupled with amazing sound design that make the game seem very realistic. The gunshots are all unique, causing all of the weapons to truly feel different. In addition, the soundtrack to the game makes it feel intense at all the right moments. In terms of the look and style of the game, it mimics a realistic war experience. When it was released, it had some of the best graphics anyone had ever seen. This added to the feel that the developers were trying to create which was a practical and not very far-fetched atmosphere. One thing that really blew me away was the map design and all of the attention to detail. The maps are all dynamic as well (not quite up to Battlefield standards, however). Are the squawking chickens getting a bit annoying? No problem, just toss a grenade or light them up and the headache is gone. Dynamic maps and objects add an even greater level of freedom and provide for a more unique playing experience. Where Modern Warfare 2 really shines, though, is in the multiplayer. I easily logged weeks of constant playing time on only the multiplayer. The ability to unlock upgrades and make your player unique to everyone else's make the online aspect of the game very addicting. For a big game meant for the mainstream media with a strict deadline, the developers did a great job with Modern Warfare 2. They successfully built on everything that made Call of Duty 4 amazing, and they made a game that would largely be considered the fan favorite in the series.

Sep 17th, 2012 at 15:51:54 - Minecraft (PC) |
Minecraft is a sandbox/ adventure game that gained a lot of popularity while it was still in its alpha and beta testing. One would not think that Minecraft would be a popular game for the mainstream audience when examining its graphics, but the game definitely struck a chord with a large amount of people. Minecraft is a game full of adventure that includes the “sandbox” element with the main goal being survival. When entering a world of Minecraft for the first time, you will find a completely different environment that is unique to anyone else’s. This is because all of the worlds in Minecraft are randomly generated each time you start a new one. One’s immediate goal when placed in this random and hostile environment should be to survive the night. At nighttime, many evil creatures appear and try to kill you which can be very counterproductive. There are number of interesting mechanics in Minecraft. The player is able to move walk, run, jump, and swim freely throughout the world. He or she can also craft a number of tools and weapons among other things. Most everyone’s favorite aspect of the game, though, is the ability to build whatever it is that your mind desires. With a near unlimited amount of space and materials, your limit is truly your imagination. Minecraft’s art is what truly makes it so unique. Everything is composed of blocks. The world itself is all blocks, and a blocky texture is applied to all the creatures, items, and objects in the game. This art direction is both unique and appealing, making Minecraft stand out among other indie games and other games in general. The level of freedom that one has in the game of Minecraft is unparalleled. Yes, the objective of the game is to survive, but why can’t it also be to thrive? Who is to say that one player’s goal may not be completely different from another’s? It is the freedom to choose and the ability to create and innovate that makes Minecraft a winner.
