This honestly the first time that I have started GTA San Andreas from the beginning. Growing up I never had the most up to date gaming consoles or computers. The beginning is interesting. The protagonist, Carl, is a black person returning to San Andreas to bury his mother. He is picked up by corrupt police who tell him that they are going to frame him unless he does them a favor. During the cemetery scene it is explained that it is a dog eat dog world. This mentality seems to be what Hobbes describes as the “state of nature.”
It seems that the social contract that Carl, the player, has been thrown into is not a very good one. There are the family members and gang members that you interact with and the enemy factions as well. It is as if there is no real law enforcement. The creators of San Andreas could possibly exploring what it is like in those neighborhoods that are predominantly minorities. They are exploring the moral issues that face those different ethnic groups and how they band together to create a social contract all their own.
The stats that the developers decided to use as indicators of your progress are interesting. There is of course money, but also there is fat, stamina, respect, lung capacity, sex appeal, muscle, several different skills. Based on the skills physical prowess is most important. This makes me feel like I am in a very hostile environment, like a jungle, where I have to be ready for anything and that my actions are justified only if I survive.
