Well, I played the game some more, it wasn't really that satisfying. I get the feeling that this game can easily become really repetitive. This playthrough was more of the same. It hasn't become boring yet, but maybe it would get there after another hour. Then again, I was really looking forward to rolling up buildings, ferris wheels, humans, and other cool stuff like on the box cover. I got through the crab level. Since it's about stars, I guess it's cool that they included constellations or whatever. I also tried the 2-player mode with my girlfriend. I thought it was pretty fun. It adds another element to the game. Either way, the game was good, but I still think it lacked that extra something that puts it over the top. It gets extra points for originality and humor though.

Well, I've heard of the Katamari series, but never tried it because I wasn't too interested in rolling a ball around to pick stuff up. The first thing I thought when I started playing this game was that Japanese people are weird, but then again, that's what makes them cool. The storyline is so off that its funny, which is what I think they were going for. The controls were simple enough, although I wasn't totally coordinated with each of my analog sticks. The actual gameplay was suprisingly fun. It was like challenging to get the katamari to a certain size and then the fun part was rolling up everything you could find. I have to say that this is a good game. The design is simple and the gameplay is solid. It's the kind of game you want to play when you just don't want to think too much about anything.

So I played the game some more and I still didn't like it. What gets me about the game is that the movement isn't fluid. The camera movement just really kills the game. I was able to get through the game by playing a little more safely. It kind of takes the fun out of it though. When I play a shooter, I just want to run around and kill everything that moves. I finally got the katana in the game. There was a little tutorial thing. It did its part. Another misconception about the game that I had is that the usefulness of the katana would be better implemented. It turns out that you only use the katana in little duels. Another thing is, although you can parry and dodge in the sword fights, I was able to just constantly swing the remote and slash the enemies to death without them really being able to attack me. I think that just proves how poorly designed the game is. Other than that, the only thing that can probably save this game in my eyes is the multiplayer, which I haven't tried yet. I don't really have my hopes up though.

    Feb 9th, 2007 at 07:32:06     -    Red Steel (Wii)

This game had a lot of potential. It is the only FPS out on the Wii right now, so it is the first to tap into the Wii's FPS potential. I was excited about this game because I have recently been very interested in shooting games. I had the opportunity to test Resistance: Fall of Man for PS3, which I thought was a great game. I also play Gears of War to death everyday because that game is the greatest game ever made, in my opinion. (BTW, I was being a little excessive in that last statement, but GoW really is a great game.) So anyways, I was really excited about this game.

I start the game. There's a little calibration mini-game thing. Nothing too exciting. When I finally got control of my character, it took me a second to realize it because the intro sequence is done with the in-game graphics. My first reaction was that the controls felt a little odd. I figured I'd just have to get used to it. After I didn't get used to it, I noticed one big difference between the Wii and other consoles. The Wii only has one analog stick. This means that I am adjusting my camera with my remote, which really sucked. I think the big misconception I had going into this game was that I thought the game might be sort of like an arcade shooter with a light gun or something. I was wrong. The Wii's controls just aren't very intuitive in this game. One thing that really irritated me was that I couldn't relax during the game. Sure that's what's supposed to make the Wii different, but like I had to keep my arm pointed at the screen or else my camera would spin around wildly. Another thing was the whole beginning of the game was kind of a tutorial, but it wasn't. They kept giving me tips on how to play, but at the same time they sent all these enemies at me and I would die. It didn't help that the tips blocked up half my screen either. Anyways, I could go on about how bad the game is, but I figure I'll save some for the next log. Needless to say, I stopped playing after I finished the first objective and repeatedly died on the next part.
