    Jan 9th, 2007 at 14:24:00     -    Soul Caliber III (PS2)

    Second installment:

Played some more Soul Caliber III, it's getting sort of boring. I don't have a memory card, so I have to renew the ps2 every day from the library and sacrifice the save data. Oh well.

Although the barbarian class is still my favorite, I've gotten the feel of the game and can now play other characters. The really fast ones are pretty good against almost all characters- the characters with immense range (like Killik with his bo staff or Sigfried with his ridiculously large sword) pose the greatest challenges. I've started playing random against my friends-- if i get a barbarian character I almost always win, i win about 80% of the time with a fast character, but I lose about 70% of the time if i get a get a medium range medium speed character. Setsuka, a girl with a sword-umbrella, seems to be the worst character. She attacks so slowly and hardly does any damage. Zasamael, the guy with the scythe, is pretty weak as well. Even though he is the final boss in all the storylines, he just seems to not do damage or be fast enough to counter a medium speed character. It's fun to play random creations as well- sometimes you get really strange combinations. I think the weirdest one I've gotten is a dude with a swashbuckler's hat, a medieval suit of armor, a long girl's skirt, and a dagger.

The stories are sort of lacking as well. I hate waiting for the map to load too. It's not just the loading, but a little red marker moves around the world as your character goes to different places to fight people...It seems that they spent too many resources on the map screen because sometimes you have to load the map screen, press x then load ANOTHER map screen, and then finally load the battle stage. All the characters have slightly different stories, although all of them fight Zasamael in the middle of the story and Zasamael's transformation, Abyss, at the end of the game. Some characters are really easy to win with, but some others seem almost impossible. The characters who are too hard to KO I just start trying to shove out of the arena (the second way to win).

The Item, Armor, and Weapon shop is a nice concept. One has to beat the story as different characters to recieve a bundle of money, allowing one to buy the items and weapons unlocked during the story. The items are things like character illustrations while the weapons add more damage, speed, or health to the character you buy it for. The illustrations are sort of cool, but nothing that you couldn't find online in concept art logs.

Overall this game seems alright, but eventually there isn't enough content to keep me playing for that long. As with any other fighting game, the real strength is in its VS mode, allowing you to destroy your friends. Unless you have friends this game is not worth the money, but if you do, it's a fun social game.

    Jan 9th, 2007 at 14:06:58     -    Soul Caliber III (PS2)

Checked out Soul Caliber III (and the PS2) from the library. It's a pretty good fighting game. It makes sense that all the characters have swords, but it's the first time I've seen that in a fighting game. I started off playing with my friends in VS mode, all of us gravitating towards the characters with gigantic swords and evil demeanors. The game seemed pretty bad at first, winnable by whoever found the cheapest repeatable move. We found out how to block soon though, so the gameplay improved.

Instead of being about cheap repeatable moves it became about timing. Some characters do much more damage, others have a longer range, and others have a more nimble quick short range attack. I always tend to play barbarian/fighter classes in games, so i naturally preferred characters like Nightmare and Siegfried, two of the hardest hitting characters. Although slow, if one is able to time their attacks to hit as soon as the enemy unblocks, they just destroy the enemy.
