Tonk (Card Game) games 1 and 2 (February 1st 2017)
Tonk is a card game for 2-4 players where the objective is to remove all cards from your hand, or to have the least total value of cards in your hand.
The Players
2-4 human players. Each player starts with a hand of five cards, and turns are played in a clockwise motion.
The Deck
The deck is a deck of playing cards with the Jokers removed and all suits of 8s, 9s, and 10s removed. Each card has a value of the number on the card (i.e. 2 of diamonds has a value of 2). Aces have a value of 1 and all face cards have a value of 10.
The Rules
Each player is dealt 1 card in a clockwise manner until everyone has 5 cards. The person who is dealt to first begins their turn. That player must pull one card from the deck. If the person has a run – three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order, or if the person has a spread – three cards that have the same value, then the player can discard those cards. To end a turn, the player must discard one card. A player can win in tonk by removing all cards from their hand, or by showing their cards to other players. If a player shows their cards to other players, then all other players must show their cards as well in a clockwise manner; whoever has the lowest total value of cards, that person wins. If their happens to be a tie, the last person to show their cards wins.
Playing the game
First session: I played both sessions with 3 other people, who were all experienced in Tonk. My first hand, I got a relatively low total value of cards, 19, so I showed my hand. The other players had, 26, 33, and 28, so I won that round.
Second session: In this game, no one showed their cards in the first round. Two players had a run of three cards, I had a spread of three cards, and another player had a run and a spread of three cards. That player removed all cards from his hand, so that player won that round.
Overall
Tonk is overall a quick game, lasting from anywhere between 30 seconds and 5 minutes and because of this, people sometimes place bets on the game. I don't see any major problems with Tonk; however, it is based more on luck than skill, which is a small problem.
