    Feb 23rd, 2007 at 18:49:40     -    Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)

Having just completed Shadow of the Colossus, I can say that it is a bona fide classic. It is challenging, epic in scope, beautiful in presentation, and contains amazing gameplay. My favorite part of the game is how each Colossus presents new challeges and are a puzzle in and of themselves. MY personal favorite is the flying Colossus in the desert towards the end of the game due to the complication in defeating it and the enigmatic beauty of the scene itself. Battling it with the sun beating down on you character as the dust whips around and its shadow slips over the sand is one of my favorite visuals from any game ever. The only thing I criticize about the game is the last battle with what is no doubt the largst Colossus in the game. While there are many parts to the battle, from just getting close enough to grapple it to getting to its weak spot, I just felt the battle was more of a test of getting to its head than a real challenge. Once you find the last weakspot it is just really easy, and I hoped for a larger challenge. The story ends beautifully if not slightly tragic in a way. Beautiful, compelling, and amazing, Shado of the Colossus seeks to be simple and finds something more that transcends anything I have seen or played before.

I played Shadow of the Colossus for more than an hour, not because I didn't plan on playing it for an hour but because once I started I couldn't stop. It is an epic and beautiful game if there ever was one, and truly a piece of art. Everything about the game is somewhat simple, the story is about saving a youn maiden in a state of either death or coma and the game only has boss characters and no other enemies. However, it is the simplicity which is almost what makes the game so wonderful. I am almost on the final Colossus, so I will finish with my opinion of SotC upon completiong.

I have complete Syphon Filter:Dark Mirror and can say in all honesty that not only is it a great hand held game, but a great game period. It has graphics, action, story, and refinement on par with console games. The controls are great, something that I was worried about when I think PSP and shooter due to the lack of a second analog stick. The production value is wonderful, from the cutscenes to the levels the graphics are extremely well done. The action is also great and fairly non-stop. Even the story of the secret virus and evil terrorist group while cliche remains interesting due to its slick presentation. Overall a great game, possible system seller, killer app, and a must have for PSP owners.

Feb 8th, 2007 at 21:18:38     -    Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (PSP)

I have been playing Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror for a few hours and I must say that it is excellent. Having played a lot of PSP games as of late, SF:DM is the best I have played since I bought the system. It is a third person shooter with some elements of stealth, but don't think it is boring just because it is formulaic. The story centers around a mysterious group called the Red Section and a secret project known as Dark Mirror. As Gabe Logan, an agent for the Agency coincidentally, you must find the source of the terrorist group and what Dark Mirror is. I will give a full review once I have completed the game but for now I can say it has tight controls, varied locations, the best graphics I've seen on the PSP, and as interesting story regardless of its commonality.
