    Jan 19th, 2007 at 06:43:48     -    Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

As I finish my second session for this game I was thinking I remember playing the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES and then playing the third one. It wasn't until years later that I played the second one. I wonder if that was just with me or with a lot of other people also. Was it because the second is just so different from the first that Nintendo was wary of bringing over here or was it that not that many people liked it. I don't think the latter is the case here though as almost everyone I know that has played the second has loved it. The level designs for the second one were equally as great as the ones on the third one in my opinion. Back to the third one though and I remember how much I hate those sand levels. I don't know why I always have, and not just for Mario games. I think I can honestly say that for all games that I play. I hate sand levels.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was one of the first games I ever beat. I remember playing it and just enjoying it so much I didn't want it to end. So now that I'm going back to it for this game log I was really excited to play. After I played for the first 45 minutes I really noticed that the level designs for this game are outstanding, especially the flying pirate ship levels. The way the entire game was designed definitely paved the way for countless of other games after that. In the time I played I only got past the first boss since I had been pretty rusty on my Mario skills. It's been a while since I've played a 2-D side scroller. The graphics ,though I remember them as better when I was young, still aren't too bad. I mean, of course you can't compare them to anything on the playstation 3 or xbox 360 but they definitely get it out done and leave me etremely satisfied. I'm much happier with much better gameplay than flashy graphics with no suvstance.

Okay so for my second go round at this game I try my hand with a different team and once again the same trashtalking arises but this time most of it is coming from me, because now I am winning. It's interesting how the roles are reversed this time as I am playing my friend again, clearly neither one of us is really that much better than the other but when your in the lead in this game the person you are beaten really really sucks. So now that I won I feel like I can come to the conclusion that even though at times this competiteveness that comes out in all of us is not very good, it feels damn good when we win and we wouldn't want it any other way.

Okay so today I was playing NBA 2K7 and I started thinking about something as I was getting my ass handed to me. Why is it that in video games just as in real life when your playing a sport or any sort of multiplayer game people's demeanors change completely. For example with my friends and I, we play NBA 2K7 and Madden and when we play there's nothing but trashtalking coming from both sides, even the losing side. It's amazing to witness, but I have noticed this with almost everyone I know that plays video games or sports recreationally. Is it that nobody can stand losing or that we just want to show our friends that we are better than them at something, even if it is at something as dumb as a fake basketball game. We have to win and we have to win by a lot. Could it be our animalistic instincts coming out in us that one of us has to be the alpha male or female? And as we are winning do we have to rub it in our oppositions face? Well it could be the fact that I lost by 23 points, but I find that this competitiveness that comes out in us during games maybe not alarming but definitely something we should look at and see if it's really healthy to have. Especially if the competitiveness we experience in games starts to follow us into our daily lives when we are not playing. But this tangent is probably me just venting out my frustrations because I'm pissed I lost by 23 points.
