it sucks when you cant beat a level. When the degree of difficulty surpasses your talent (and will to play) the game becomes a lot less fun. I think it is probably at this point when those who want to become masters at the game distinguish themselves from those who don't, and spend countless hours trying to beat the level that is bugging them so. I am not one of those people. But playing this game definetely showed me what made a game great, and what I want to do in my own game. Colorful levels, simple but difficult challenges, basic storyline, etc... the rewards of completing a level were bragging rights, since anyone who can get far in this game without warping are obviously great, and the cheats and hidden itemsmake any level worth exploring. After playing this game for a while, it is clear why this game is considered a classic, and why putting aside maybe a day or two to learn how to beat it might still be a waste of time, but fun nonetheless.

Super Mario Brothers 3 is sweet!! But how could jumping around crazy colorful worlds, eating mushrooms, hopping on little monsters, and trying to save a princess and kings not be fun? The plot is just to rescue the princess, but each level is like an obstacle course, dodging cannon balls and bullets, making daring jumps to small ledges, avoiding or vanquishing different combinations of enemies, with each level getting progressively harder and harder. You can even choose which route you can take to get to the ending, which is more than I can say for the Nintendo Wii game I played. You can power up with flowers and feathers and things until you finally come to a boss to kill. There are only two buttons to use, but the game's simplicity is probably what makes the gameplay so much fun. The themes of the levels change in each world, and the learning curve is easy enough to make a mistake every once in a while and still be able to progress. The conflict is simple enough to have some sort of general reason why you are put into the levels but what makes the gamer keep playing is the higher and higher degree of difficulty that each level has. Within each world that you are journeying through, there are also little games, like picking items out of boxes and matching the pieces of different items with each other to get more and more life. It is annoying that you have to start over at the beginning of the world you died in and play through every level again, but it just makes you try that much harder, knowing what you have to lose. Playing this game makes me happy :)

So I came back to the game a couple hours later in hopes that I was just in a bad mood from not eating, but nope, the game is still not fun. Every level is exactly the same, different compartment like rooms with bad guys who look exactly the same, the only difference being the scenery. Every boss is the same, just with substitutions for costumes and powers, but the entire game is just SO REPETITIVE that the desire to find out what happens next is completely overshadowed by how completely mindless the gameplay is. There are no puzzles or anything to make you think, its just hit the attack button, throw in a special move every now and then, and run around til you find the big bad guy, and spend a little longer fighting him. The only reason you would buy, rent, or play this game is if you are a marvel enthusiast, but even then, you would probably be so disappointed you would quit anyway. There is no strategy necessary for this game, the only thing you need to beat it is the patience needed to play however many hours it takes to win, and a free schedule. boo marvel alliance!

reflections on marvel ultimate alliance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Marvel Ultimate Alliance for the Nintendo Wii sucks. Not only is it not fun, but it is completely boring. The only reason why I keep playing I think is to see how the story progresses but if it is nearly as long as the Zelda game, I'll probably just cut my losses, throw in the towel, and hit the power button. The cut scenes, though sometimes fun to watch, were mostly just scenes of the villains slowly revealing their plans, explaining and summarizing what was happening with graphics that honestly were not that impressive. The gameplay was dull too.
You are the leader of a four man Marvel team that is asked to carry out missions for other mutants (who seem to know a lot more about what is happening than you do) and follow the map around to the different checkpoints, fighting mindless drones until you fight a boss that is either easy or sort-of-hard. Completing the mission is not difficult at all because each time you fight a henchman, you get more life and they are so easy to kill, you feel like if your mutants could just use their teleportation powers to get to the main chambers where your final battles against the bosses (and only challenges) are, you could have saved an entire hour of your life and nothing would be different. What makes running from room to room around these levels bearable is seeing which unique powers your character has and using them, but since there are only four or five powers for each super hero, the novelty wears off quite quickly. New characters are unlocked throughout the story, but with a game this lame, who really cares? The story is completely straightforward without the ability to alter it or make decisions to change the consequences. It reminds me of a 3D streets of rage for Genesis but longer and with a slightly different plot. Unfortunately, the fact that it was on the Wii made me really excited to play it and I was sorely disappointed.
Anyway, the idea to join all the marvel characters together in a cooperative game was fun at first since most of the games I've played involving marvel were vs. fighting games, but the monotony and repetition of each level quickly made me tired of playing and honestly, I thought the old school x-men game in the arcades with three buttons (attack, jump, and special) was way more fun than this one.
