    Feb 9th, 2008 at 02:22:37     -    Crackdown (360)

In Crackdown, you play as super soldier in an action/adventure platformer created to put an end to organized crime that had taken over the city.

This was my first time actually playing Crackdown and it really had left a great impression on me. At first it seem like an ordinary San Andreas look-alike, and though it does have similar features and element, the experience was very different. You start off with some basic weapon to fight the a gang that had taken control part of the city, but you easily find out that you grow really fast in the game. The way the game rewards you is by giving you ability points to the certain skill you used to defeat your enemy. So, if you beat down an enemy, you become stronger. If you use your firearms, you become more accurate and deadly with arms. However, I had the most fun leveling up my agility. I found myself flying( ok, i was jumping) through the city, it felt really awesome. It really felt open ended since it doesn't force you to do the missions and you don't necessarily need to do them either. It a very fun game.

    Gameplay

I had high expectations when the second time to play came around. I played it with a buddy of mind to change it up a bit. We thought it had co-op but to our dismay, it didn't. It was a versus mode. It was cool though, we still played it. I was really off when playing it and it was really hard to get as into it as I did before because I had to keep switching off controllers. This meant I didn't get as far as I did in the last run. This also means that I didn't have as much fun. I knew I could of done better but it was just harder to do it when you do have to switch the controller.

There was also this thing with the lives system that was different on the single player. It seemed that on versus, you start off with only one life. Then after the continue, you get the standard two lives. We found that a bit weird and confusing. It was fun seeing the way my friend reacted on tight situations and likewise for my friend to me me in tight spots. Overall, the game is very fun, very fun when you get into it.

    Design

One of the things that I notice right off the back was that you can customize the weapons so you can pick the ones you want. This way, you can pick the weapons that fit the way you play and it can also change the strategy you use when playing. This give it much replay value. I found myself playing over a few time so I can test out the different weapon upgrades. The controls for this game are great too. First I thought that the ship flew to slow compared to the enemies, until I found out that you can upgrade your speed. It has the same shmups mechanics that other shmups but the the weapons customization does so much for the gameplay.

I also really enjoyed the design for each of the levels. Each level seems to have a theme to it. The first level with the basic space battle and the second with the bubbles. I thought that was pretty creative. However, once you explored the weapons and get a taste of each of the levels, there is not much else to the game. This is the only problem i encounter in the game. You start to notice the repetitiveness of it. Still had a great time playing it though, and I do recommend it to other gamers out there looking for that old school game feel.

    Summary
You are a ship fighting off waves of alien space ships.

    Gameplay
The game was really fun, but it did take me a bit to really get into the game, since I haven't played shmups in a really long time. I was dying badly right in the first level. But after I got through one continue, I ogt the hang of it and the game was on! I found myself completely sucked into the game and i became so passioned by the game that my friends that were watching me play we laughing at the way i reacted when i died or completed a level. I'll enjoyed the feeling i had when i felt that i had mastered the first level. However, as the game progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to complete each level.

The farthest that I made it in the game was at the end of the 3rd level and the only reason that i made was because I had all the upgrades available. I felt so awesome and so invincible when i had it, it was one of the greatest feeling I had in a long time. This is a very very great game and it deserves to be called a classic and recommend it to everyone!

    GAMEPLAY

As I played Blue Dragon the second time around, I found myself still enjoying it, maybe even more than the first time. The story didn't go much further than what it had the first time around, but I got into my first boss battle and it was quite exciting. During this time, i was at a higher level than before with more skills, so it made the battle pretty interesting. I was fighting this dinosaur thing with armor on its back. It was pretty cool because I was able to steal a Silver Bracelet from it and I had to figure out its weakness. Ok, I didn't have to figure out its weakness, it told me where it was half way during the battle, but i did have to figure out how to hit it, since normal attacks couldn't reach its head. But yeah, after that battle, what started to excite me was the leveling. As I reached higher levels, new skills were learned and new classes were opened.

Being able to find new items on the map still was quite fun, but it did become a bit tiresome following the outline of the map to make sure that I looked everywhere. It was cool when I found xp boosts though, that made it worth the work. And finding poo (not just any poo, golden poo) after a battle still put a smile on my face. I ended up in an area where a puzzle was in need of solving. I was stuck for a bit, but it's nothing that a little exploring couldn't handle. The puzzle was hard enough to stall me a bit, but it was nothing harsh. So yeah, I was still into the game quite a bit, and still fun.

    DESIGN

What I really enjoyed about Blue Dragon was the leveling up system. As you battle enemies, you gain experience and SP. Experience is for your character and effects your HP, MP, and other attributes. SP is experience given to the shadow guardian and effects some of the attributes of the character but also the new skills and classes gained. So instead of buying a new skill from merchants or already have a fixed number of skills, you gained them as you grow. Also, when you change classes, say from a black mage to a sword master, you can still keep the skills learn as a black mage. This isn't the first time I've seen this though, but I do enjoy this structure.

The battles feel pretty smooth and don't get that boring. Every action goes into this animation that feels pretty cinematic. It follows system where the players take turns depending on their speed (I guess) or how long it takes to do certain attacks, depending on how long you charge it. And again, the poo presents never fail to make the victory that much more sweeter.

The art style for the game isn't anything new, but is fun so see. The creatures look unique and each present a different mood when entering battles. I often laugh when i fight against the Poo Snakes (don't what's the obsession with poo) and when I run into the Fat Rat, I mean business. The way each of the areas looked weren't that great, and the some of the maps where pretty big, which made it a bit boring trying to find stuff. However, overall, the presentation of the game was unique and different from most titles offered on the Xbox 360 and was refreshing to see.
