GAMEPLAY:
In Ikaruga, you're ship has a shield which can be either black or white and you are able to chang the color in an instant. when you are hit by an enemy bullet, if it is the same color as your shield, it will be absorbed. This is a key mechanic of the game, and something that really sets it apart from other shmup games. This mechanic also changes the challenges of the game a lot, by making the skills needed more about pattern recognition rather than trying to fit the ship through a small opening in the waves of bullets without touching any of them.
DESIGN:
The main inovative game mechanic that the game is centered around is ability to constatly change your ships shield to absorb certain types of bullets.
When your ship fires, the color of the bullets will be the same as the current color of your shield. Also, the enemy ships in the game are either black or white, and will take double damage from bullets of the oposite color.
The player is also able to unleash a powerful attack when their energy bar is full, but to fill the bar they must aborb enemy bullets, which make absorbing generally a better strategy than dodging.
The idea of the shield allows the game designer to create lots of interesting and unique challenges for the player, which require the player to analyze the color patterns of waves of enemy bullets and rapidly alternate the color of the ship's shield to manuver through without being hit.

Ikaruga is a vertically scrolling shooter video game in which the player must destroy the waves of enemy ships while manuvering your own ship through the waves of enemy bullets.
Ikaruga doesn"t have much of a story or characters, but in my opinion it isn't really important for this type of game. The game can be played in one or two player mode. You're ship has a shield which can absorb enemy bullets of the same color, which was nice addition that adds a new twist to this type of game.

Jan 24th, 2008 at 23:28:07 - Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) |
The first Super Mario Brothers had a style of gameplay that is exciting and fun, and Super Mario Brothers 3 took that style and remade it into a world packed with new creative ideas. There are several new mini games add into Super Mario Brothers 3, such as the memory game, the card lineup game and the two player version of the mario brothers arcade game. Although these are good, it is the levels themselves that make this game so good.
The stages are very diverse, some may require a great deal of skill to traverse the platforms while the screen is scrolling quickly, and others are constructed like a maze which you must navigate quickly before the time runs out. The items have been expanded a great deal from the previous mario games, while they still have the mushroom, fireflower and star, they also added items such as the leaf, frog suit, tanooki suit, hammer brother suit and the boot.
Mario's controls significantly improved over the originals everything seems more responsive and he has greater influence over his movement while in the air. Mario can perform a variety of tasks, such as jumping, swimming, running, stomping on enemies, shooting fireballs, climbing, and even flying. Once he has a raccoon tail, you can make Mario run left and right to build up power, as indicated by a flashing P-Meter, then jump to take off into the sky and fly for about 10 seconds. Although flying had been used in videogames before , Mario 3 is one of the first games that I know of to utilize it in a truly innovative way. There are some stages that require you to master flight to complete them. Others reward you with secrets and hidden areas.
Overall this is one of the milestones in the Mario series, and it is one that everyone with an NES should play.

Super Mario Brothers 3 is a 2D platform game. It has a more similar style to the first Super Mario Brothers than the second. Also It can be played with 2 players.
Super Mario Brothers 3 has the introduction of a map screen, which at some points allows the player to make a choice of which path to take. It has the same exciting, fun and fast paced platform jumping action of the previous Mario game, but in an even more interesting world. Ive had the most fun with this game out of all the others in the series.
