    Feb 20th, 2008 at 23:08:48     -    Donkey Kong 64 (N64)

    Summary

Donkey Kong was the name of the game. One of the levels of the game was to fight your opponent. By pressing different keys one could make ones character jump run and hit the opponent. When you are running out of lives you can go in search of watermelons to regain lives. The object of the game is to defeat your opponent by fighting them.

    Game Play

Well this was my first time playing Donkey Kong and at first I felt confused because I was not sure what to do or how to play. As I continued to play the game I started to get the hang of it. It was a bit exciting but after awhile I began to get a bit bored and frustrated because it felt like the character was not doing what I wanted it to do. I guess I thought I was getting the hang of it but I really wasn’t.

Well the game allowed the player to choose from a variety of characters. I do not know all the names of the other characters. The only character I know is Donkey Kong who happens to be the main character. There were four other characters not including Donkey Kong. There was a girl character the other three characters were guys and one resembled Donkey Kong. Different characters did something different but they also had similar moves.

Well I was playing against my roommate. It was our first time playing the game so we were both kind of lost on how to play the game. I would ask her how to do the move she had done because I had not figured out how to do it. When we would do a move we had not done before it would take us a while to figure out how which buttons to press to do the action again. One of my friends was watching as we played and she kind of told us what we had to do. She would tell me to take it easy on the control which was funny because I was apparently hitting the buttons to hard.

At first the game was interesting because it was new to me. After a while I got bored but I think I was because I wasn’t familiar with it and I did not know what to do. Even though I was playing against my friend it was still boring because we both did not know how to play. Perhaps if at least one of us knew how to play then it might have been a bit more interesting. Although after a while I think my roommate got the hang of it more than I did.

    Game Play#2
While I was playing I felt a bit more enthusiastic because I was able to move up a couple of levels. Knowing that I could beat the level that was taking me forever motivated me to continue playing. Every time I lost I learned something new about how to beat that level. At one point I was a bit upset because I had gotten all the balls and right before I got to the ball with the E the character hit the wall and I had to start the level all over again.
The game doesn’t really have a narrative or storyline. The main objective is to go through the levels gathering the green balls and the one ball with the E. The levels get harder as the player beats the previous level. I liked the fact that it was very simple there is no narrative text the player just gets to play the game without having to stop to read the text in the game.
I really didn’t have a social interaction with anybody since the game is a one player game. While I played the game I did make some comments when I lost and I had to start over. I really did not have any interactions with bystanders because I was alone while I was playing the game. If there would have been bystanders I think my interaction with them would be very minimal since most of my concentration would be focused on the game.

    Design
The design elements that made it a good game was that it was keep very simple and easy to learn, yet mastering the game was difficult. In the game the player has to make jumps to get to another platform yet it had to be done at a certain speed and time to have the character make the jump without hitting the walls. The game was structure somewhat like a maze.
I thought the level design was okay. The levels varied at each level going from easy to hard to semi- easy and so forth. It made it interesting because the player doesn’t know what to except next. What I thought made the levels interesting was the fact that the player could not it see to far ahead of the road. Not being able to see so far ahead makes the level interesting because it makes for a somewhat suspenseful game.
The challenges the game had was that it was very easy for the character to crash into a wall. Also in order to get the green balls the player has to get to the upper platform, but in order to do so the player had to do a jump and during the jump make a loop and land safely. Sometimes you could make the jump and sometimes the jump would be to short. There are times that the player makes the jump but loses control and the character hits the wall.
The game doesn’t really foster social interaction because the game is a single player game. I also feel like the game requires the player’s full attention. I really don’t think social interaction would be helpful in winning the game.

    Feb 9th, 2008 at 00:20:19     -    adrenaline challenge (PC)

    Summary
The game is called adrenaline challenge. It is a game that could be played on the computer. In the game the player is in control of a guy on a motorcycle. The object of the game is to gather all the green balls and go to a green ball that has an E on it as fast as possible without having the rider of the motorcycle crashing against the walls. If the driver hits any wall he dies and the game is over and the player as to start over.

    Game Play
At first I thought the game was going to be easy but I was wrong. The first level was pretty easy, it was named training, but the next level was much harder. I died so many times. I would get really happy when the rider would get one of the green balls. In the second level there were three balls but I got only manage to get two out of the three. I felt sad when I would see the rider fall because even though I was so close to finishing to level I would need to start over again. Starting over again was sometimes very frustrating.
I liked that there was only one character because it takes the player straight into the game. As soon as you hit the button to play the timer goes off and it starts counting the minutes. What I thought was funny was the sound the character makes when he hits the wall. Although the game only has one character the game is rather interesting.
The game was very interesting to play because it was a challenge. The player would have to drive backward, forward, do a loop to get to the platform where the ball was. If the rider misses the jump the possibility of the rider hit a wall was highly probable. That is what made the game interesting the player has to have precise timing to make the jump and avoid the character from dying and having to start over.

    Gameplay#2
While I was playing for the second time I didn’t feel as excited because I had already played it and I knew how the game went. When I first played the game I was excited but after I played it once again it was like ok I can continue and try to get a better score. The second time was a bit more competitive because I wanted to improve my score.
The game didn’t really have a story to it. All the characters had to do was race against each other. Although the game didn’t have a story line it was still fun to play. I liked going and trying different tracks. There were some that I really liked and others that I didn’t. The one track I didn’t like was the one with ice. I guess I didn’t like it because of the snowman that I always forgot about and could never avoid them in time.
    Design
The game design elements that made this a good game were the obstacles that the track had. Like in the snow track they had snowmen that the player wasn’t suppose crash into. If the player did I would slow him or her down and they would lose the spot they had. In the beach track there were trees and crabs. In the highway track they had cars and other vehicles.
The levels in the game varied by 50cc being the lowest 100cc being the medium level and 150 being the highest. I only tried the 50cc since before today I hadn’t played the game. The game keeps the player interested because it is competitive and you want to be number one every time you race. And when the player is just racing by themselves they want to improve their time so that when they play with other opponents they have a better change at winning.
This game does foster social interaction with other players because the game is a multiplayer game. I believe it can have up to four players playing the same game. The players compete against each other for first place. I was playing by myself against the computer and I was making comments and I’m sure that the game would have been more interesting if I was playing with someone else and they were giving commentary too.
