So I finally got around to signing up for GameFly and playing BioShock. I know, I'm behind the curve of most people here but what little time and money I have I usually spend with sports games. Although I did take some time a few months back to download and play through the demo.
Anyway, I already sort of new what to expect going into the game, but was excited to explore the depth that I'd heard about. The demo creeped me out sufficiently to make sure I closed all the blinds and turned up the surround sound in my living room. The art-deco style present through the whole game astounds me, particularly because I really enjoy the architecture and art of the period. To paraphrase a review I read, it manages to make the environment of the game appear historic and futuristic at the same time.
I played through the first couple levels in maybe three hours. This is probably longer than most people, but I explored the areas in the game pretty meticulously. An old roommate of mine used to plow through games as quickly as he could, and it always irked me because I'm the complete opposite. I don't have to find EVERYTHING in a game, but I like the narrative aspects to most games as well, and narrative is one thing BioShock certainly has an abundance of. So far I may be enjoying that aspect of the game more than anything else. I don't love the combat in the game, and as much as I recognize that the plasmids/tonics/etc (and combinations thereof) will continue to develop as the game progresses, I'm always short on ammo and eve.
However, this won't be going back in the mailbox until I finish it. It's still early, and I see how the potential payoff can be huge. I'll update every couple levels I beat.
