I have played the game for several hours over the past few days. I have been having trouble of thinking of a third journal entry. I talked about so much in the last two that I thought I was out of stuff to write about.
After looking through my notes on utilitarianism I recognized that CJ may actually be doing well for his people. CJ goes around through out the game trying to better his gang and community. In his world doing good means something completely different from ours. The only way to make life better for his gang is to kill the drug dealers. So his people will stay drug free. Also in the gang environment the only way to make your people happy is to eliminate other gangs. Now this may sound wrong to us but we live completely different lives. But as long as he raises happiness with in his gang he is morally justified for what he has done.
For the past several days I thought that this game was just morally wrong and had no ethics. But looking at it from this prospective it looks like I was wrong. According to utilitarianism CJ was morally justified in his actions. I never thought I would say that he was right in what he did.

Almost all the actions in the game go against the devein command theory, Kantianism, and Social Contract theory. No one in the game fallows any type of rules or thinks of what should be done. Everyone does what makes them happy and forgets about others feelings. You can kill people to take their money and you can steal cars in the game. Stealing cars is easy you walk up to a car open the door punch the driver and take off. But if you steal a car from the wrong ethnic group such as the Hispanics they will shoot at you. There are no morals or ethics that concern anyone in the game. I mean CJ can roam the city as he wishes and do what he wishes. If he feels like killing that’s what he will do and he won’t be negatively affected. Another thing that was interesting in the game is health. CJ could be shot several times and he would not die. He would just need to go to a hospital and he would be at full health. What’s interesting about this is that there is a lack of realism in the game. CJ can be shot many times and nothing really happens to him as long as he visits a hospital. This lack of realism is consistent throughout the game. The police give up on you. Rival ethnic gangs don’t go after you when you kill one of their people.

I have played several Grand theft auto games in the past. This was my first time playing San Andreas. I never thought about the game as being morally or ethically wrong. I would just play the game and enjoy myself. Playing this game with that in mind I realized many disturbing things. Everything in the game is very stereotypical from the gangs to the people. The portrayal of gangs is that they are drug pushing cold blooded killers. This can be seen in almost any gangster movie from Scar Face to Casino. These are movies that kids normally would not watch. The game developers are bringing in content not meant for easily influenced minds.
The social contract theory about everybody living according to a set of moral rules and having the government enforce them. The social contract theory does not exist in this game. Sure there may be police driving around but they do not do anything. You can kill someone in front of the police in broad daylight. The only thing that will happen to you is being chased by the police for a few minutes. Once you lose the police they forget all about you. The kids that play this game get the wrong message from the game. They think it is cool to be a gangster that kills, steals and does drugs. The best part is the police don’t care about what you do. Some kids may believe this is how the world works and functions.
