I had never played San Andreas before, though I've played some of the other GTA games. I expected and got a lot of guns, drive-by's, good music, loose women, foul language, and of course, interesting gameplay. The opening story for CJ was interesting and kept my attention. He was going back to San Andreas after being away for a long time. After arriving in San Andreas, he was immediately engulfed back into the kill or be killed lifestyle that he seemed to have left behind.
After being robbed and left in another gang's territory by two crooked cops, players first learn to ride a bike. I rode the bike to CJ's old hood where I was introduced to character's that are important to CJ and the gameplay. I learned that he was in San Andreas for his mother's funeral and that many of his former homies were dead. CJ seems to be a good guy but finds himself surrounded by gangs and killers. The first few missions teach you how to navigate through the game, ride a bike, and drive. You also earn respect and cash in the first few missions. I was taken to get a haircut and I chose the jheri curl because I personally can't have one in real life. I don't like that you have to stay fit by not eating too much and working out. I think this takes away from the focus of completing the missions and staying alive because it is one more thing a player must worry about.
San Andreas reminds me of the movie "Boyz in the Hood" and "Menace to Society." The game and these movies have some similarities in the story, look, and feel. The main characters want to make good decisions but their surroundings keep them in bad situations. Also, the game has an authentic sense of early 1990's Los Angeles gangland.
