Cave Story is a charming little platformer made by a single developer who goes by the alias of Pixel. It took him 5 years from start to finish to make this game, and his hard work shines through in both brilliant area design, beautiful pixel artwork, and a wonderful story. I can firmly say without a doubt that this is the best platformer I have ever played. Yes, this tops Mario. Yes, this tops Super Metroid. And, though I am slightly hesitant to say so, I believe it tops Yoshi's Island. Speaking of which, the game seems to have been heavily influenced by Super Metroid. Definitely worth your time. Considering that this is a freeware game and is openly downloadable, time really is all you need to give for an experience that will change the way you view platformers forever.
