Ah..now I know what was going on. There's a button which I thought was for "dropping" a weapon, however you "absorb" it instead. When you absorb, your shield goes up...how much depends on the weapon you absorbed. Goes to show that I wasn't really paying attention...though I feel a little bit cheated because Wipeout is a game where driving so fast that you don't have time to pay attention to that! (at least when I play...)
The funny thing is that I actually missed the ability to repair your ships shields and wondered why they had decided to get rid of it. Well, they didn't! It just got moved somewhere else...

I was recently reading a preview for the new PSP Wipeout game (Pulse?). The author of the preview makes reference to the original PSP Wipeout which I'm currently playing and mentioned something which cause my eyebrows to raise.
I don't have the magazine (Edge, if you're curious) in front of me at the moment but I seem to remember the preview mentioned something about the shield-repair powerup mechanic...or something like that. What? You can get your shields repaired?
I really missed this from the PS2 Wipeout (where you could drive into "pits" and get your ship repaired at the cost of some speed. There have been more than a few races that I've lost due to destruction. So you can actually get your ship repaired in Wipeout Pure? I've been playing this game for a while now, why hadn't I noticed that?
Shame on me?

Although I've been enjoying the races and unlocking new tracks and whatnot, I've been having a strange (and very frustrating) sense of deja vu.
If you take a look at the list of games I've written about you'll notice another "Wipeout" which I stopped playing due to technical problems. Something similar is happening now! I'm pretty sure that the dev team isn't the same for both games, and if it is... well, that's some bad news! I'm actually starting to entertain the idea that this series is cursed! Heh!
So, the problem I've been facing appears when I turn the machine on from its standby mode. It always locks up at some moment! If I go to standby while in a menu, the keys lockup and you can't do anything. If I go to standby while in a race, I can compete but as soon as the race ends, BANG! it locks up.
I have no idea why this happens but it's really annoying. In particular because the loading scheme of this game is really, really, bad. You have to jump through a lot of hoops, key presses and what not before getting back into the game proper.
Sigh.
