My son and I are need 5 or 6 stars before we unlock the "last stage". I'm not actually sure what will happen when the star counter gets to zero, but that's how many we need to go.
This whole things seems to be going by in a flash and I am personally amazed at how much variety there is in this game. I never know what to expect when I visit a new galaxy and it's always a delight. Furthermore, each surprise never really outlasts its welcome. I think the new surprises from our last session include Mario wrapped in rubber and Mario's flying ability. Definitely didn't see those coming!

I have over 30 stars now and the levels are definitely starting to get trickier. Not harder in the sense of figuring out WHAT to do, rather in the sense of being ABLE to do it without falling into space, or dying, etc.
Earlier in the game, I had been warned about "comet galaxies" and their nefarious effect on galaxies. Depending on the comet, you would either have to do the galaxy with only one life, or against super fast enemies, and so on. At least, that's what I thought comets were about. I think. I'm not exactly sure where I got that idea from, now that I think about it some more. It turns out that comets are basically a way to get "extra"(?) stars. At least the comet I did the other day played that role. Maybe the other comets are different?

I've been playing this on and off over a couple of weekends now. It really is great fun but I can't say that I've been blown away or anything like that. I have enjoyed the coop-mode in that it provides the perfect excuse for me to play with my son. He really enjoys being my "assistant" and I feel that what he can be successful at it and also contribute legitimately to our success in the game.
I was trying to think of any other games that allow for this sort of lopsided cooperative/collaboration and the only game I could think of is Mario Kart Double Dash for the GameCube where one person drives and the other fires weapons as well as leans in on corners (I think that's what the 2nd player does...).
