jp's Feel the Magic: XY/XX (DS)

    [July 19, 2005 10:13:22 AM]
I"ve unlocked a few special clothing items thanks to some Sega GBA games (conveniently placed in the other cartridge socket). It turns out this was not really a "secret" since the game manual actually says which games to use in order to unlock these special items. I guess sometimes it pays to read the manual, right?

Anyways, I'm closing this log off since I got bored with finishing the game on hard.

Closing words? Good game. Play it.

Yay! It took me a while to figure out what to do, but I finished the last level and thus, the game. Yay!

The annoying thing about the last level isn't so much that it took me a while to figure out what I had to do. Rather, it was the fact that it was preceded by an unskippable cut-scene. Thus, I would play 4 seconds and wait about 30. Repeat a few times and you can see where the annoyance lies.

Another weird thing, and this might be more a DS thing than the actual game, has to do with the microphone/blowing. For the last level you also have to do some blowing. I guess it must actually be measuring input noise because I got a whole bunch of "errors" (ie. bad plays) without even doing anything! (this actually reminds me of some parts in Wario Touched I played on the plane...) It seems that a lot of ambient noise equals blowing on the mic. Weird, eh?

So, now I've started playing the game again in hard. Let's see how far I get before jumping in to another game.

I cleared final level (no. 2) and there is another level after that!

Unfortunately, this one requires blowing into the microphone and I was a bit self-conscious about doing this on the plane or on the subway. So, I have yet to finish the game though I did clear a few more "Memories".

I'm also really curious about loading the game up with a few (select) GBA games in the other socket. I've heard that if you have some Sega games you can unlock a few neat items...we'll see if that's true!

I feel that it is very appropriate to write this in the registration hall of DiGRA2005 (a games research conference). The flight over here allowed to dedicate some quality time to this game (as well as another...but you'll have to read about that elsewhere).

I was stuck on the boss level, which was annoying because I had to clear 3 bosses in a row. Well, done that. Woohoo! And there is... another boss level!
The wackiness is even greater than before, if you can believe that, but that is what I like about this game.

The level I'm currently on requires a lot of rapid rubbing in a particular area of the screen...and I'm worried about damaging the DS. You see, after trying to clear the level.. I got kind of worried and quit out. Then I loaded up another game and...whoops...it was like I was still rubbing the screen! Uh, oh... that's not good. So I decided to cool it and shut the console down. Fortunately, when I booted up again it was all working ok, but I'm rather wary of playing that boss level again...hmmm.

I've made a LOT of progress on this game since my last update. I think I'm actually getting close to the end now. The downside is that I haven't really had any time at all to play on the DS, and I probably won't until the semester opens up again by the end of August.

Anyways, I'm currently stuck on the first annoying level in this game. It is basically a rehash of many of the previous "boss" levels with the annoying caveat that you have to do them all in order, without losing and without restarting. So, I haven't been able to beat them all yet... but I will sometime.

Once you've finished a level it appears in the "Memories" section and if you play it again (where they are longer and harder) you can unlock stuff. I think it is only outfits for the silhouette of the girl, but I'm not sure.

Another funky thing I've noticed is that when I switch the game over to Japanese language, the girl on the starting screen appears without the top of her bikini! (and no, perverts, you can't see anything...its a silhouette). Weird, eh?

Aaaah. The Japanese and their wacky videogames. Sure, this game started out "normal" with me playing a guy who just wants to impress a chick. But now? I'm fighting a giant carnivorous plant! Hehehehe...

It is really fun and the music is excellent.

I am now the proud owner of a Nintendo DS and it is definitely the coolest gadget I've had in a while. For those of you wondering about the PSP, ask yourselves what platform has the better and more innovative games. You won't get a gameplay experience like that of the DS anywhere else.

So, on to the game... Feel the Magic is just so, Japanese. It's cool. It's quirky. It makes as much use of the touch screen as is humanely possible. I've played some 6-7 of the mini-games and while they are not all equally good I have to say that the game is great, as an integral audio-visual gameplay experience.
