Finished! (and about time too).
I had to do some "juggling" (or, strategic thinking) before being able to clear the boss level. I basically had to sort out which combination of spirits and items would give me the best chance of winning. This all took longer than I had anticipated because I actually went back to the next-to-last(?) level to kill a baddie I was sure would give me a new spirit (Golem).
After getting Golem, well... I finished the game!
Final percentage? 91% (I didn't get ALL the spirits, as you can probably imagine)

Final boss fight! (87% complete)
I've tried 3 or 4 times and have yet to win...but I'm definitely getting better. I can take out the 1rst boss no problem, but I still need to put some more work in to the second boss. I might have to hunt around for a new spirit to help me out...one with a super massive attack.

72% (or maybe a little bit more)
This game is starting to wear a bit thin by now. I'm sort of waiting to get to the end instead of having to wander my way around all these levels that are starting to get REALLY tough. I just cleared two, the first of which tool me at least 5 attempts (and I kept dying near the end...). It was so hard that I ran into a monster I'm sure is immune to all attacks and must be bypassed (instead of defeated). It's a giant mechanical spider-like thing (you can slide under its legs). Anyways, gameplay has gotten pretty lame...sure, every boss gets you a new ability but it's starting to get a bit annoying to have to zip back and forth to equip the right ghost/spirit required to do the job.
I really, really hope I'm getting to the end...please?

71% and still going strong.
I've had a few more boss fights and surprisingly enough, I've beat them all on my first attempt. I think I'm finally falling back on to some of my Metroid skills. Basically, I'm remembering NOT to stumble into boss fights but rather to take my time and wait, watch and test out attacks. That way I don't get killed too quickly and I can start to anticipate enemy moves much better. It's sort of like a kung-fu zen kind of thing. Wait for your enemy and do not give in to anger and rashness in order to succeed. Hahaha.
I picked up an AWESOME spirit that lets me skip over areas that I've already visited. This was SO long overdue.

51% complete and there isn't really anything new to tell. I've basically been ho-humming my way through some more levels, fighting the same monsters and finding new useless spirits to add to my "catalog". I did have another boss fight against a friend though... I'm hoping there isn't much left...getting a bit bored.

37% done and 2 and a half hours of play. That is soooo not true. (I die a lot, and then some more).
Anyways, my last "boss fight" was against Silva who is a huge Native American dude that is also friendly in the manga. He fights me because he wants to prove that I'm not strong enough to face the real "bad guy". Uuuh...sure.

25% done and at least an 1:30 of play (I die a lot, and I don't think that time is considered...).
So far I'm very "hmmm-ok". There is nothing "wrong" with the game though it isn't as developed or interesting as a Castlevania. Also, there are some parts that are pretty difficult! I think that Castlevania-lite is a pretty good description of this game since the Shaman King story (and characters) are integrated VERY weakly.
In fact, until now, the boss fights have been against friends who are (stupidly?) forced to fight me...losers. ;-)

I'm at 16% and making progress. Difficulty has gone up a bit and the level design is getting more interesting. (there is more "find the key" to exit and less "just get to the other side")

There is only one reason I got this game. I had to.
Hahaha. Actually, it's a bit more complicated than that. I placed an order on EBGames online with a gift certificate I had and I was "maximizing" its value. I didn't want to spend much money over the gift certificate and I didn't want to get anything too crappy. This game fit the bill in terms of: 1) had decent reviews 2) cheap enough, though not too cheap.
So, here I am playing a game I've never heard about. It's based on a manga (and anime!) that I'm actually familiar with and think is kind of cool....the game is, however, a competent Castlevania-like game. Action side scroller with inventory management (but no RPG elements). It's not bad, though there are some crazy dubm things that could have been fixed.
For example, when you start the game you have the option of visiting 3 locations. It turns out that you can only really go into one of them. The other 2 are impossible (until you get some power that will let you through). I wasted a not-insignificant amount of time finding this out the hard way. (I was sure I was doing something wrong...like not using some special ability).
After clearing the first level, you get to a level with a similar problem..and what looks like a dead-end. (all the other levels are, by now, clearly not accesible). It turns out you have to use the "up" button while stnading in front of a storm drain (to go inside). Oh. That's SO obvious (it's not). I only got past this bit because of a gamefaq entry that said something like: "this is the part where everyone gets stuck." If everyone else gets stuck I guess I'm not that stupid. Right? ;-)
