I sat down the other night to make some more progress but after some 15 minutes I decided against it. It is just to painful to make my way through the irritating loading times for a game that simply isn't that good. (for my tastes)

I've got the Expeliarmus spell (and made some further progress as well).
As soon as you get the spell you have to use it to fight an animated Gargoyle. I was having trouble with the timing, basically you have to "charge" the spell and release a little before the enemy spell (a ball of light) hits you. I kept on missing, and missing, until...
Hey! This is just like a tennis game! (Virtua Tennis is what I thought of). As soon as a made the mental switch from "Expeliarmus" to "hand with racket" and "enemy spell" to "tennis ball", it all became much easier. The timing started to make sense... Ha! Ha! Ha!
Seriously, if you play this game and make it that far...try it, ir really works!

Loading times are horrific. They feel even worse because, in some parts, they occur so often. I find myself zapping over to some TV channel and waiting until the game's audio kicks in over the speakers before flipping back. (I've got the PS2 audio coming out of a set of speakers separate from the TVs)
Anyways, I'm currently trying to get the Expeliarmus spell (to be used in wizarding duels). I like how they've integrated the Hogwarts/Harry Potter lore into so much of the game.

So far I've been rather surprised by this EA game. Not all of my surprises have been pleasant...but anyways, here's a rough list:
1. They weren't able to license the music from the movie? Strange...
2. I don't think the voice acting is by the real actors, but it's pretty good nonetheless.
3. So far, everything looks rather nice. Lots of bright colors when appropriate and so on. It does rather feel like the first HP movie, which isn't all that bad.
4. I thought that one of the levels would be the car ride to Hogwarst....I'm sure the designers MUST have thought about it, but ran out of time before they could get it right?
5. The control system is pretty poor and unresponsive. Whenever I'm near an object or location that requires a button press, I usually have to press twice!
6. The puzzles are ok. A little bit easy, but that's ok. After all, I'm not really the target audience for this game. (I would assume it's for kids a wee bit younger than me...say, 20 years younger!)
7. I like the spell system. :-)
8. The camera is rather odd. You can't really pan it around much...
In all, I'm a bit let down as far as movie-game conversions go. But maybe this was a book-game conversion? It seems so, given the lack of movie footage, music , etc.
Anyways, it's a so-far so-nice, but nothing special kind of game. I think my son might enjoy watching me play.

jp's opinion and rating for this game |
Controls are very wonky and unresponsive. The rest is ok, nothing terribly special. Loading times are appaling.
