GAMEPLAY:
On second play, I found this game to be kind of annoying. I kept dying, and kept losing my rings which really pissed me off. Plus, I couldn't get past the first boss that easily. It took me like twenty tries to beat him!
The game was still fun though, and I couldn't stop trying, because there was always fast paced action and several tiers to each level so you could go a different way every time. Plus, you could be either Sonic or Knuckles, two different characters with two different types of abilities. I like them both because they are just plain cool, and you have fun playing as them too.
Still, I think playing this game was funnest for me because there is such replayability- even with no checkpoints or savepoints, I was willing to play it again because it was fun every time and there was always a new thing for me to do. Not only could you take every path a new way, but also at a different speed!
DESIGN:
The speed was definately the thing that set this apart from most games. Without it, it would be lame. It's always fun to speed through the loops and through the level without a care as to where you're going, and that I think is a good idea.
The intro when we see Knuckles laying down peacefully and watching the critters, only to be bombed by Dr. Robotnik, is really cool and offers insight as to Knuckles character and role in the game. It was a quick backstory as to why he is in the game, and nothing much needed to be explained. I liked it because it was quick, cool, and didn't get old to me.
I seriously hated the way you lose ALL of your coins when you get hit. It doesn't matter how many you have, you lose them all, and then if you get hit again without collecting any, you die. I thought that was stupid and not thought out well enough, you should lose like half your coins, but not all. I had a problem with the score, too. It really served no purpose, and I don't think there was a high score, so it didn't matter what you got. I thought that was stupid too, there should be a high score or at least a reward for getting a high score.
I liked the aesthetics a lot. The game had a whimsical feel that was not to be taken seriously. I mean, when you killed a bad guy, they turned into a critter and ran away. The sound just fit with the artwork too, I think, in that you are put in a uniqe world: the world of Sonic and Knuckles!
