i delved into some new aspects of mario kart wii. i started playing on manual instead of automatic, which means drifting is on. when you turn the wheel, you hold down B and your player begins to drift. blue sparks start flying out of his/her/its wheels and you let go of B for a speed boost. it adds a whole new dimension to the game. being able to get speed bursts without boosters on the course or mushroom powerups makes a HUGE difference. it also makes turning alot harder if you choose not to drift. because the game wants you to utilize the drift, if you dont hold down B on some turns, your character doesnt turn as much as you are turning the wheel. So you really have to perfect the drift, because on courses like rainbow road where there are some tight turns with no railings, you have to time your drift right lest fall off the course. if you choose not to drift, like i said, your character wont turn as much as you want it to, so falling off can happen this way too.
i also tried out the battle mode. its the standard balloon popping game from before.

Mario Kart Wii is awesome, bottom line. I bought it yesterday and played for 3 hours and only stopped playing because I had a meeting i had to go to.
It has all your traditional mario kart elements with some new twists added to it. All of the classic weapons still remain, but they threw in ones that have never been seen before. For instance, the white squid Bloopy. If you hit an item box and the roulette lands on Bloopy, when you use it, it puts ink blots all over your opponents' screen, severely reducing vision. Bullet Bill is also another new item. If you get this item, you turn into a giant bullet for a short period of time, which acts as a speed burst and allows you to squash any opponents in your way. The old items still remain too. Things like red shells, green shells, star, speed burst mushrooms, etc... all make their return to this game.
The courses are crazy. Some of them are fairly basic, like Luigi Raceway, which is intended to be basic, but others get intricate and complex. Toad's Shopping Mall is long, complex, and convoluted. You go up escalators, through different parts of a shopping mall, down another escalator, through a parking lot (dodging cars, might i add), and more to complete 1 lap. They also decided to include classic tracks from previous Mario Karts. Race tracks from the versions of Mario Kart on SNES, N64, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, and Gamecube are included amongst the different circuits.
Probably the best feature of this new installment of Mario Kart is the Wii Wheel. A wheel is included with the game to use while racing. You simply place the wii remote horizontally into the slot in the center of the wheel and you're ready to drive. It takes a few races to really figure out how to use it, which is a fairly short learning curve. Once you do figure out how far you need to turn the wheel, etc.. it's pure fun from there.
I am yet to try the battle or online modes but I'm sure they will be just as fun.
Overall, Nintendo did a great job with this game. They effectively made use of the Wii Wheel, made some awesome new race tracks, kept a nostalgic appeal to it by adding the retro ones, and stayed consistent with the formula that has traditionally made Mario Kart one of the best games ever made.
