Of all the online games I've played, DartMUD is in a class all its own. I have never played an online game that was intentionally as hard or as historically accurate (for a fantasy world) as this one. The crafting system is incredibly vast, the combat is complex, the magic is diverse and the feudal system is alive and well. On DartMUD, you won't usually see unarmored mages taking on owlbears by alone. You'll see mages studying, fighters sparring or hunting, nobles in their castles, craftsmen in their workshops.
