I think I've got a better handle on the combat system as well as the game. I've just won a game on the intermediate difficulty level and I'm gearing up to play one on a higher difficulty level. There is still a lot I don't understand (where do the science and culture points come from? what are trade points good for?), but I've been able to try a few things out that seem to have worked. My informal knowledge on strategy and other observations so far includes:
(a) Road building isn't all that useful or necessary. From a defensive point of view, it's best not to have roads (and generally not worth the investment early in the game).
(b) It's not a bad thing to have your cities reasonably bunched together. I'm not actually sure if there is a drawback or not to have cities with overlapping resource areas (ie, two cities "exploiting" the same area). I would imagine that it's not a good thing, but I'm not really sure...
(c) Winning by military conquest seems to be nigh-impossible. The other victory conditions seem to roll around earlier. I have the impression that culture is probably the easiest. As long as you can stay alive (at some point ALL the other civs will gang up on you, why don't they fight amongst themselves?)...you will eventually get the culture you need. This contradicts what I've read (academic stuff) that always seems to go with the notion that Civ allows multiple paths to victory but the military option is ultimately the "best".
(d) I think I've under-appreciated the value of spies. I was able to steal a few "key people" from another civilization thanks to a extended spy operation.
(e) I hate it when musket riflemen shoot down a wing of bombers. That just isn't right.
(f) Bonuses make a BIG difference when they stack up. I've learned this purely from paying attention to the top screen when I'm about to attack someone. There are terrain bonuses, experience bonuses, civ bonuses and I don't know what else. I've seen units with at least 5 lines of different bonuses and effects applying.

I don't think I've played a Civ game since Civ 2. That was a long time ago.
Playing this game has been sort of like remembering what I love about Civ while also remembering what I hate. Actually, what really confuses me. Ok, what really frustrates me.
For some reason I have a hard time figuring out how the game works, and then things happen that surprise me (in a negative way).
I decided to play my first game on the easiest difficulty level just to get a hand of things. As expected, I won quite easily (though it took a looong time!) I wanted to figure out the combat system during this game and I failed miserably. I threw everything I had at the capital of the US civilization. I lost everything to a bunch of archers. I mean everything. I was throwing archers, legions, armies of legions, etc. Everything died. Wow, archers are awesome. I wasn't able to take that city until I had tanks. Really. I actually lost one set of tanks to...archers.
Hmmm..
For my next game I'm playing on the middle difficulty. I bought archers and put them in my city because CLEARLY archers are awesome. Pfff..apparently that's not the case when I have them. I have a hard time keeping them alive. Why? I have no idea. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong and what key information I'm missing. Unfortunately I don't have the game manual with me. Sigh.
