Gears 2 is even better than the first one. It had a lot more story to it, and good meaningful story. Games aren't known for being emotional, but man, this one part in Gears 2 had me glued to the screen. Poor Dom. I've even been thinking about that scene the last couple days. And the story line drops off on a cliffhanger after the credits which I assume Gears 3 will have to deal with.
The gameplay is still awesome, taking cover and using big guns. There are more big guns now, and they all have executions associated with them. This time there are multiple models of assault rifle and pistol. There's the "mulcher," a fine name for a massive chaingun. And there's a flamethrower and a mortar launcher. You can switch guns whenever you want because the enemies are always carrying different types. I tended though to stick with the lancer for its chainsaw, and a sniper rifle (or the crossbow with exploding arrows). There are also new poison smoke grenades. So there's a lot of weapons for all different situations!
Gears 2 was one big non-stop action sequence, even more so than Gears 1. Very cinematic. Very epic. There were several vehicle sequences. You get to ride some giant vehicle in the beginning, and later on you ride a reaver and a brumak, both of which were felt huge, especially the brumak. I really felt like I was turning the tables on the grubs and stomping them into oblivion.
I played for the first time co-op over Xbox Live for the first few chapters with M. I read that the Kinect mic would work if you didn't have a headset, but man, I need to buy a headset. Her voice was so ridiculously soft, and she said she couldn't hear me well either. She plays online all the time, so it wasn't her. So actually the first bit of the game was kind of confusing because I had to turn the game volume all the way down just to hear her, and Gears uses lots of in-the-moment yelling of orders and stuff to alert you to what's going on on the battlefield. But I'd watched J and Z play some of the game before that and was able to remember/figure out basically what was going on, and to ask M because she's played it a few times.
We can all go back and play it though because *drumroll* I unlocked Insane difficulty. J is interested in that.
There's really not much else to say that I didn't say in the log for the first one. I got a DLC "deleted scene" from one of the campaigns to play through. Then I guess I just look forward to playing Gears 3!
