Yet another game that got rave reviews that I was pretty excited to try, and that I just didn't enjoy! The music was fantastic, best part for sure, story sounded forced, neat visuals I guess, but very bare bones, AI annoying after just a few levels. They seem to magically know where you're going to go. If you play your turn, they'll change what they do, which is lame because they shouldn't know what you're doing. It's just such a pure tactical game that there's no flare around it, which I suppose I like. I could see fun against a friend. There aren't any big explosions, the visual style is neat but dull. I tried custom skirmishes, but they're brutal. Also, it rejected my unit customization. Why let me customize it in the first place?
The game is broken up into a planning phase and an execution phase. On the procedurally generated levels, you give your units their orders and play out the scenario as if the enemy units stood still. Once you commit to your plan, the enemy does the same planning phase. Then the execution phase plays out where both the plans are enacted simultaneously, so of course your brilliant maneuvering doesn't always go according to plan! It's neat because you have to try and think a step ahead of the enemy, which again is why I say this would be fun against a friend, but is brutal against the AI since they have the uncanny ability to predict what you're going to do.
