Kingdom Hearts II is an action adventure game developed by Square Enix and published by Buena Vista Game. More specifically, it is a hack and slash role playing game. Kingdom Hearts II is typical Japanese role playing game and it is very similar to Final Fantasy series. There are three main characters, Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy. A player can only play as Sora and two other characters help Sora fight the enemies like heartless and nobodies. The main objective is to travel from one world to another to defeat the enemies. Depending on which world a player is in, other Disney characters will help Sora progress through the quests. For example, Mulan will be added to a player’s party in the Land of Dragons. A player does not have much flexibility in creating the character. He or she cannot create a name for the character. Also, a player cannot control other characters such as Donald Duck and Goofy. However, a player can differentiate his or her characters by equipping different abilities and items. For example, a player can choose different types of Keyblades for Sora to wield. He or she can also determine abilities and items for two other characters.
Also, Kingdom Hearts II contains shooting element. When Sora and others travel for the first time to new world, they have to ride Gummi Ship and shoot down the flying objects. This is very similar to arcade space craft shooting games. After the world is open, a player no longer has to go through this process.
Kingdom Hearts II contains many cinematic scenes connect the storyline. After a player finish the quest, a brief cinematic scene is shown to the player. These scenes are very interesting and important to the game. However, I thought there were too many scenes and these were interrupting players from playing the game, although a player can skip the scenes. I personally did not want to skip the scenes because I would be missing large parts of the game. Since I did not skip the scenes, I am taking longer to finish the game. I have not completed all the quests for Kingdom Heart II. I am looking forward to see how the story unfolds.
