“Unblock Me” is a free application provided on the App Store for iPads and iPhones. This puzzle has one simple goal: to get the red rectangular block to the “exit”. For each round, there is a red rectangular block that sits in the middle, surrounded by brown rectangular blocks faced either horizontally or vertically. In order to get this red block to the exit, the player must use one finger on the touch screen to drag the blocks in the direction they are facing (for instance, if the block is faced vertically, the player can only move that block up or down). The brown blocks surrounding the red block serve as obstacles, and the player must use their logic and strategize where to move the blocks in order to clear the way for the red block to be dragged across the board to the exit. Once this goal is achieved, the game gives out a congratulating tone, and the next level is loaded. There is an increase in difficulty with each passing round, and the player has the option of choosing from a list which puzzle they want to take on (there are at least 200 puzzles). Like the game play, the visual appearance of the game is also simple. Each block has a “wood-like” design, but it is very animated. The bright color of the red block and the idealistic look of the layout and animated elements of the game (including the font) make the game look easy-to-use and simplistic. With this simplicity, the game allows the player to not feel overwhelmed or distracted by any unnecessary décor like many games contain. I recommend this game to anyone of any age that can operate this type of platform, especially older adults, because it allows the aging brain to think and refresh itself by taking on this mind challenge.
