Zombies, boulders rolling towards you, tornadoes, UFO’s abducting humans, and volcanoes spewing out, a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a post-apocalyptic setting?! The Last Driver is one of the best free games I have played in a long time. It is made by Chillingo and is an endless runner that falls in the same category as Temple Run and Zombie Highway are in. In fact, this game is themed after Temple Run and Zombie Highway. This game gives these slogans: “Drive FAST and DANGEROUSLY” and “This IS NOT ‘Drivers Ed’ this is SURVIVAL”. The world has become dilapidated and you have nowhere to go except that you pray for some destination that is safe. In this game, a Tyrannosaurus Rex will attack your car and a UFO could blast the bridge you are on. The Last Driver involves racing through the streets of an apocalyptic-ridden city while taking out as many zombies as possible. There are three controls methods: one tilt, and two touch. Also, there are two action buttons: one giving the ability to jump over obstacles, and the other is a fire button that lets you zip oncoming zombies with limited ammo available. You can always run over the zombies in your path, but fast reactions are essential for dodging the various boulders and cars in the path. The game falters when it feels very difficult to predict what’s going to happen next. For example, some zombies are more destructive than others. Cars can be thrown at you at random times. Tornadoes and destruction of parking lots can happen spontaneously. Large boulders can come from any place and at any time. The missions and objectives in the game are not that good. Having only two sets of missions or objectives repeating with harder goals is boring. The first set was about having a zombie attached to the car for x seconds, driving x meters without killing any zombies and driving x meters unharmed. The second set was killing x amount of zombies, getting x amount of coins and driving a set distance. When I played this game, the missions became so repetitive that I focused more on getting enough money to buy upgrades or maybe buy a faster, more robust car. There is only one life in the game and you can get 10% more life if you pick up a power up that gives you lives. The “lives” can help replenish my health. It is a challenge to keep driving and avoiding obstacles while having low health or almost no lives. So, health and lives are limited in this game. What about inventory? The inventory, such as ammunition and weapons, has both utility and scarcity in the game. The guns in the game can be upgraded, giving you more power to kill the oncoming zombies. There are four types of guns in the game: shotgun, rocket launcher, ray gun, and super ray gun. You can upgrade the car too; there are three cars, ranging from low stats to high stats: muscle car, off road car, and zombie killer. And it takes time to get enough coins to buy them. If you get another car, you are going to have to start from the beginning upgrading it with weapons. But thankfully, you can switch to the stock car to be able to get more money without worrying about it. The power-ups are scarce in the game and are temporary. Some power-ups in the game include 10% more life, more jumps, and more ammunition. These power ups are able to be lost. Special terrain includes bridges, damaged roads, and street ‘islands’. As said, there are no time limits in the game of any sort. What about boundaries? You are only able to drive within the roads and you can drive off-road only a few distances to the left or to the right. Actions that are limited in this game are jumps. You can only perform a certain amount of jumps every time you play this game. The last bad thing about this game is the music; it is a series of driven loops that soon becomes old, and the sound effects also feel rather dated. Zombies kind of sound cheesy.
