I have been playing Arc Squadron for a while on my iPhone 4 and it was great except for some things. For some reason, it took a long time (about a minute or two) to load this game up, which I am disappointed about. The game is done well and it takes place in the far reaches of the galaxy. An evil race known as the Guardians is taking over the universe and the goals are to discover the weaknesses in the Guardian defenses and bring about its downfall. Unreal-powered visuals and graphics are gorgeous. There is so much gameplay in the game and a lot of missions to complete. Unique boss fights and maneuvering challenges are scattered throughout the campaign. Multiple ships, weapons, and upgrades give gamers plenty of goals to work toward.
What I don’t really like about the game is the control scheme. I wish I had played it on an iPad. My swipes and drags steer me along each course . Quick swipes allow me to do a barrel roll. My targeting reticule is extended in front or my spaceship and automatically shoots as soon as an enemy enters my field of view. Secondary weapons like missiles and laser weapons involve tapping on an enemy, which can be awkward since I have to remove my steering finger. Because I removed my steering finger, my ship is in danger. The interface of the game is quite small on the iPhone and my steering finger caused me to miss incoming bullets, asteroids, and other obstacles. However, I was doing great when I collected the cubes in each level and traveled around obstacles at a slower speed.
There were some hard moments in the game. One of the hard moments occurred when I was trying to kill the garbage monster. I was only able to shoot his arms at first. Shooting the arms using bullets felt ineffective, so I used missiles and lasers to take down his arms. As I killed his arms, he started to move his face, which produced lasers randomly on the screen. I have to maneuver my ship when the lasers were coming at me. If I hit one of the lasers, my health could drop drastically. There were 5-second breaks when the monster was giving out the lasers. During those 5-second breaks, I had to try to kill his face by shooting missiles or laser at it, which drastically reduced the boss's health. I had to kill the boss at a snail's pace, so it took a lot of tries to kill him and finally move on to the next mission. There was another problem when shooting the targets in the challenge levels. My weapons somehow reload their bullets every 3 seconds, instead of every 1 second. That was why I could not get over this challenge, but it didn’t affect me moving on to the next level if I got at least one star on each of the challenge levels.
