Still way behind on these. I played System Shock like a month ago. I found the game ultimately not worth continuing, after 5 hours or so, because there are much more entertaining similar games out since then that I've played. System Shock is the obvious precursor to games like Bioshock (especially), Deus Ex and Thief. The same types of skill trees are there, items, hacking, plasmid-like magic and so on. Basically I played enough to understand the historical significance of the game.
As for the game itself, I enjoyed the setting, which reminded me of Dead Space's derelict ship overrun with hideous once-humans. I enjoyed where the story was headed, something about the ship's AI being the bad guy. I read up online afterward. I appreciated the complexity of the systems. But, as with so many older games, the controls didn't feel good to me, there were a zillion hotkeys, many of which I had to reconfigure because they felt wrong. Thwacking zombies with lead pipes felt like swinging a wet noodle. I looked into downloading some mods to improve the visuals but ended up not. Also, the game is pretty brutal. The zombies are relentless and if you trigger an alarm they just keep spawning til it goes off. The map is hard to read. Magic power quickly runs out, you respawn with a fraction of your health, etc.
Glad to have tried it. Like I said, enjoyed it mostly for the historical significance, but wasn't a great experience playing. Newer games in the same vein have ironed out the skill trees, made UI elements more comprehensible.
