David plays building games Pt.3: Minecraft. The grandaddy of them all, I screwed around for a couple hours and didn't seem to have made it anywhere at all. Even with all I'd learned from Terraria about building blocks, I was useless in Minecraft. The recipes for building operate differently. You have to trial-and-error the recipes (or look online) and, for me at least, it was much harder to tell what stuff was before swinging the pick at it. I thought I would get used to the blocky pixel art of Minecraft too, but I really didn't like it. It was like Doom outside with woodworking tools. The enemies were also harder, although less numerous. And when you die, you lose everything and have to corpse hunt! Since I had NO idea where I ever was, I lost everything I'd collected more than a few times.
I suppose the first thing to do when I pick it up again is make some landmark and create a central hub to respawn and go back to. In hindsight, I like this aspect of the game better than Terraria's because it forces you to be more creative with signposting and building things. I don't build in Minecraft because it's cool (at least in the beginning) but because if I don't I will die and get hopelessly lost and lose everything.
That's motivation.
Anyway, I set the game aside because I think I will be able to happily spend forever learning recipes and exploring and protecting myself from the night, and like I usually say, I'd rather play a story. I'll most likely come back to this in the future, but now is not the time. Glad to have finally played it some though so I don't just go "huuuuh?" when people describe it.
