So, I only figured this out while trying to sort out player profiles for Diablo III... So, I guess I owe EDF an apology! It turns out that the PS3 lets you have different user profiles such that, for certain games, you can have different saved game info (I think?) and track progress separately. So, in the case of Diablo III I could play co-op with someone and have all the progress saved. Why you can't do this on one profile is beyond me, but, at least you can do it.
It turns out that my issue with EDF (where one player's progress was always wiped clean) had to do with my lack of understanding of the PS3 system. Oh well. I guess I can complain about how unintuitive it is and all that, as well as argue that there's no real way to figure that out from the game.
In all, I'm not sure we'll go back to it, but perhaps? We've already beat the game once...so, not sure if it's worth grinding for better gear/loot/achievements.

I picked this up as an impulse buy. I had heard it was good, looked on the back and saw it had a co-op mode, and bingo.
It's been fun so far. I've played a few hours with my son (co-op) and it's a simple game to be fair - you basically shoot bugs and there isn't much else to it. Well, the environments are urban and destructible and that's about it. It does have the most wonderful B-movie feel to it (not on purpose?) which I think is part of the charm - at least so far. We've only played Chapter 1 (and a few of the missions in Chapter 1 more than once)...
Highlights so far?
There's a huge walking spider ship that is just breathtaking. It reminded me a lot of the Spielberg War of the Worlds - in a good way. Although it doesn't do much (other than wander around and spawn enemies), when I first saw it my jaw dropped. I guess part of the fun of the game is that you always feel small and somewhat overwhelmed - there's huge swarms of ants and things are always exploding.
There's some flying ships (ravagers?) that you have to take out quite frequently as well. My character uses a homing missile weapon to shoot them down and it's quite satisfying to shoot a missile, what it streak off and then destroy the target. It shouldn't, really. After all there's like 30 more of the things you have to deal with, but that brief moment of watching the rocket spiral up and hit its mark never fails to trigger a "Yes! Got 'im!" moment in my head.
I have had a few frustrations though...
As I mentioned I've been playing co-op (split screen) and as you play each player unlocks things, gains xp, and so on. However there's something weird in that I haven't been able to figure out how to create a "profile" for player 2 such that all the stuff the 2nd player earns isn't lost when you quite the game. There's a weird interface issue where I get the idea that I should be able to create a profile, but there's no option for that. It's quite strange and I'm going to have to go online to see if there's a solution/fix for that (or maybe just read the manual...)
Speaking of which... we finished Chapter 1 (high fives all 'round), but the next time we loaded the game up...we had to start from the beginning again. We haven't had to save before, so it's another weird situation where I'm not sure if the game glitched out or if we forgot to do something we should have. We'll have to play chapter 1 again, but I'm really hoping that the "unlock" will stick this time... sigh.
