df240's The Simpsons: Hit and Run (GC)

    [March 2, 2015 10:23:56 PM]
This game consisted of much segmented gameplay. One of my main goals were to collect all of the hidden material throughout the levels because the missions were easier than searching for things. Since there are no lives, the main resource is coins. While playing the game this time, I found the person who was selling the cars that I could buy. The level progress said there were 5 cars on the level but currently I could only purchase one of two trucks so I decided not to spend any of my coins this time. The only penalty of the game world is the "Hit and Run" feature which only happens when you continue hitting things. While on a mission, I was require to drive through the tommaco (tomato with tobacco) field and I had to collect them. However, I did not know that hitting the plants were considered a hit and run so once again I had the police chase after me but this time I was able to get away. It's good that I did not buy one of those trucks because they could have been to slow or heavy which would not have allowed me to make some of those jumps that I made while getting away. Time is also a resource that shows up during certain missions. After being chased by the police, I only had about 12 seconds left to complete the mission but luckily, I was close to my destination. After finishing this mission, I was awarded a pickup truck that I could use by returning to the phonebooth and calling for it. That remains a weird mechanic because I'm accustom to going to a garage rather than going to a phonebooth and the car magically appears. The next mission required that I used a provided truck to destroy someone else's car. I was able to finish the mission but the truck was extremely slow as I expected. It's nice that all of the cars aren't the same speed. I know that this is common in games now but it is bit of a surprise for the year 2003.

Similar to before, I enjoyed playing the game. As I expected, the game did begin increasing the difficulty each mission. However, this increase is slow and could possibly turn away hardcore gamers who would like more of a challenge. I didn't have time to finish the level so I'm not sure if it became a serious challenge but I can say that the game was fun overall.

The Simpsons: Hit and Run is an action adventure game in which the player is suppose to complete missions that are apart of the storyline. Hit and Run’s core game mechanics are extremely similar to those of Grand theft Auto. Furthermore, this game adds a less serious feel than GTA, but open-world mechanic is still there.

There are so many things that can be done in this game. It is comprised of 7 levels and the user can view their progress by pressing start and clicking the level progress option to view how much have been completed within the level. In this gamelog, I'm only documenting what happen through the first 3 missions, in which I also was able to find a lot of collectibles. The game starts with a tutorial mission which allows the player to get use to the game by simply driving to the store for some ice cream. While driving, there are arrows on the street that tells me where to go to complete the mission. However, after playing around and finding coins and gags, I was able to find many shortcuts. Gags are random things that happens within that level once the user goes and activate it. For example, once in the store, I could push a button and turn on the silent alarm. During the first official mission, the goal was to get to Lisa's school before the principal. It was my first time doing serious driving so I continued to hit people on the side of the road. After a while, the police showed up and I stopped just to see what happens. After paying 50 coins for being busted, I restarted and completed the mission. Homer is always running so I assumed I couldn't go faster but I accidentally pressed X and actually sped up. I found where to do the street race by randomly going to places and talking to people. My driving was so bad that I had to attempt it again. After coming in first place, I was told I finished 1 of 3 races on the level and was allowed to roam friendly again. There was a telephone that I thought would be a gag, but it allowed for me to call for my car to be driven to me. It seemed weird because there was no one in the driver seat when the car appear but it was convenient. The next mission was to collect mission items for Flanders which was pretty easy. I like to believe that a lot of things done on this level is suppose to be easy and to get the user comfortable with the game. Before finish playing, I had 32% percent of level one finished.

I enjoyed playing the game, though I was waiting for the missions to get more difficult. As stated before, the game was a less serious than GTA and it was extremely noticeable with the mission. However, it was difficult finding all of the gags and other novelties within the level. There was a lot of climbing and jumping to find all the bugs, coins, and gags. The dialog added to the experience as well. The jokes and animations was always followed by a smirk. The graphics weren't bad either since it is an adaptation of a 2D cartoon.
