After being demoralized by Valkyria Chronicles, Hearthstone’s heroic mode, and Super Hexagon this week, I needed something to calm the nerves, something mindless and simple. Ah, Battlefield 3! Indeed, so far I’ve run in straight lines from checkpoint to checkpoint, followed NPC teammates with “follow” printed above their heads, shot terrorists, and listened to a lot of military people yelling and cursing. Best part so far: An earthquake occurs in the midst of a firefight. Haha. The game sure is pretty and has some cool destruction!
And after finishing this very short campaign, I feel I need to at least try the multiplayer since that is what people buy these for after all. The single player was okay. It was a fun shooting gallery. You have 0 freedom to explore or do anything save follow direct commands from squad mates. You can’t even freely choose weapons. There are some lying about, but you can’t store any, none carry from mission to mission, you’re constantly and magically carrying RPGs and other specialty weaponry that you couldn’t access with a hotkey a minute earlier. The story was decent, but unoriginal, and I hate the ambiguous ending. It’s like an action summer blockbuster movie. It sure looked good, but I’ll probably not remember a thing about this in a month.
