    jp's Muramasa Rebirth (VITA)

    [December 3, 2015 04:46:15 PM]
About 10 hours in and I've changed my mind.

I don't really mind the backtracking anymore. This is because I've realized that it gives me a chance to appreciate the art a lot more. And it really is beautiful, and colorful, and painterly, and bright, and fantastical, and... I'm bad at this. Adjectives. I'm especially with how the artists have been able to create spaces that feel quite different from each other, using the same assets, by only changing the lighting and adding some minor effects. It's quite stunning. Really. Furthermore, I later realized that a lot of the environments have little details that were really enjoyable to see, once I noticed them. For example, during fight sequences, some of the background elements can "change" - in a fight in a bamboo forest you can chop some of the trees down (it just happens in the background - it's not like they're items you interact with purposefully) or in a large temple there are some hanging lamps you can knock down (slice through the chains they hang on). They're minor details, but I found they really added to the visual richness of the experience.

The other thing I've come to realize and appreciate is how interwoven with Japanese folk tales and folklore the game is. Or, to be fair, how much I THINK it is. Perhaps someone knowledgeable with Japanese myths and folklore wouldn't be impressed - but for me it felt really fresh and new. Sort of like old Japanese fantasy anime (e.g. Ninja Scroll).

I also started to understand, and get into, the sword forging system - you always have a 3 swords active, each with different characteristics as well as a super-move. It was fun to go into the forging menu and check to see if I could forge something new down the "tech tree" of swords available. There's a whole bunch I missed, but the ones I did get to try out were fun.

So, the game has two characters and you choose which one to play (and whose story to follow). I finished Momohime's story and played just past the first boss of Kisuke's story. I'm not sure I need to play Kisuke's all the way to the end...

Wow is this game beautiful and wow is there a lot of backtracking. A lot. And it gets really tiresome because most of the areas are empty and there isn't all that much to do.

But, the game is gorgeous to look at and I'm impressed at how different they can make the mood and feeling of different areas change just with some lighting and other tricks.

    But still, so much backtracking!
(ok, part of this was because I took a wrong exit out of an area and ended up visiting two entire areas before realizing what I'd done. Sigh)

In all, I seem to be making good progress (on Act 4's boss - a giant!). I tried this last night and it was the first time I've died in the entire game so far. Clearly the bosses are "where it's at" but I may have erred by playing on the easy mode. Or maybe not. I guess we'll see what the difficulty curve looks like for the rest of the game. Assuming I don't get bored...

Wow, this game is so colorful and pretty. I'm really enjoying that side of it while wondering what the game will turn into. For now I'm still in the early tutorial/learning side of things. It looks like most of the game's emphasis will be on combat (swordplay) - but I'm not sure how well that'll work out since everything is so big on the screen that I feel like things will get too crowded? It's hard to tell so far because it's all been really easy.

For now I'm confused about the gameplay and the story, but curious enough to want to keep on playing.
